Terrace-seat galbi restaurant in Nampo-dong, Busan: Bueongi Maeul
In short
Bueongi Maeul is a charcoal-grill seasoned pork rib restaurant in a Bosu-daero alley in Nampo-dong, Jung-gu, Busan. Just before Chuseok, the writer and her parents shared one plate of pork ribs (800g), a small doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) for 3,000 won and rice, sitting in the open-air terrace indoor seats because the street tables were full. The ribs arrive pre-grilled in a 40-year secret sauce that isn't salty, and they go well with the steamed egg, salted pollock roe and wild garlic leaf side dishes.

Where to sit at Bueongi Maeul when the Nampo-dong street tables are full
For something like a Chuseok celebration, I came out to Nampo-dong with my parents to eat seasoned ribs! I wanted to sit at the street tables with them, but... they were already full, so we sat indoors instead — except it's an open-style terrace, so the cool breeze kept blowing in and we still got that outdoor feeling. Bueongi Maeul, a Nampo-dong favorite! My dad was like, "there's a grill house tucked in here?" but honestly this whole alley is packed with good restaurants ❛˓◞˂̵✧

The indoor tables had tablets for ordering. Our first round was a plate of pork ribs.

What side dishes come with the ribs: free steamed egg, pollock roe, wild garlic leaves
Bueongi Maeul is a Nampo-dong restaurant I love not just for the seasoned ribs but also for the variety of side dishes haha. The steamed egg comes free, and there's salted pollock roe, wild garlic leaves, radish salad and more, so even though it's seasoned rib, it never gets boring haha.

How are the pre-grilled seasoned ribs cooked at the table?
At Bueongi Maeul, the seasoned ribs come pre-grilled once already, and my mom said she liked that because there's no sauce burning off and it cooks faster.

The seasoned ribs sizzling over the charcoal haha. The key is flipping them often so they don't burn too much lol. Since they're already pre-grilled, the sign says to put them on the grill, cut, then grill again — follow that and you get delicious seasoned ribs!

Does the 40-year secret sauce taste salty?
Even though they're seasoned ribs, the sauce isn't salty, so I dipped them in the extra sauce first haha. Moist, tender seasoned ribs, need I say more~~ The faint charcoal aroma with the sweet-salty soy flavor is what makes this so different from ribs at home haha. It's a 40-year secret recipe, so it's not salty and you never get tired of eating it!

A bite together with the refreshing, tangy chopped scallions was so good~~ You've got to eat the scallions along with it for that sharp, refreshing kick!

Once the first batch is all grilled, we put the second batch on the grill and really dig in!!! Seasoned ribs are only truly good wrapped in lettuce! Lettuce, perilla leaf, salted pollock roe, garlic, all stuffed in — the king combo!!! And seasoned ribs absolutely need cool pickled radish alongside haha.

It also goes perfectly with the wild garlic leaves everyone fights over haha. Bueongi Maeul's seasoned ribs aren't salty, so they taste amazing paired with all sorts of side dishes.

As the meat starts running low, we order the doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and rice, and keep grilling the remaining ribs in between!

While waiting for the rice, I picked at the ribs — they were so tender the meat slipped right off the bone!! My dad was surprisingly good at picking ribs clean too... lol still got it, dad~~

Ending the meal with 3,000-won doenjang jjigae and rice
Doenjang jjigae (small)
With prices these days, you have to admit it's hard to find a grill house selling doenjang jjigae for 3,000 won, right???ㅜㅜ It's sold in a simple, just-right portion, so it's easy on the wallet too haha. Made with countryside soybean paste, it's got that salty edge and comes with fried tofu — a country-style doenjang jjigae with its own quiet charm!

White rice with seasoned ribs and kimchi! Honestly this combo is basically the truth too haha. A bite of rice, then a spoonful of doenjang jjigae, and the seasoned ribs are wrapped up perfectly. Gotta enjoy the street tables before it gets any colder!!! The three of us finished a plate of seasoned ribs and were pretty full, so my dad said he'd shoot some hoops with me to help digest, betting on who buys Sulbing shaved ice — I have to win!!!ㅋㅋㅋㅋ Before Chuseok, if you want somewhere not fancy but with that old-school vibe, catching the autumn breeze with your parents over seasoned ribs, I recommend this Nampo-dong favorite, Bueongi Maeul~~
