A hidden hideout that opens when you push a bookshelf. Bitters is a Hongdae speakeasy bar packed with signature cocktails and whisky.

Where is Bitters and how do you find the bookshelf door?

Bitters is a speakeasy-concept cocktail bar 440m from Hongik University Station Exit 9, in the basement of the 'Hongdae Mulgalbi' building. Take the elevator down, and the entire wall turns out to be a bookshelf door.

I was hunting for a cocktail bar in Hongdae with a different vibe, and found this one! I went in with high expectations for the 'speakeasy bar' concept, heart racing since it's known as such a hot spot — and honestly, when the elevator opened onto a wall completely covered in bookshelf doors, I panicked for a second thinking I'd come to the wrong place.

But when I gave the brown book labeled 'Bitters' a little push, the bookshelf door slid open just like in a movie! The vibe already won me over right at the entrance...!

A basement that doesn't feel like one: 3.5-meter ceilings and the back bar

Once inside, the ceilings over 3.5m made it feel wide open rather than cramped, despite being underground! The back bar lined wall-to-wall with whisky was a stunning visual, and with jazz playing softly, it was honestly the perfect place for a quiet chat with a friend.

What the Valheim signature cocktail (22,000 won) tastes like

Among Bitters' signature cocktails, Valheim is ₩22,000 — a drink made with dill, lemon, honey and even pickle brine. Looking at the menu, I noticed there were 12 signature cocktails, all inspired by books, which made browsing genuinely fun!

Valheim, ₩22,000

I ordered the cocktail called 'Valheim' among them, and with dill, lemon, honey and pickle brine, the flavor was genuinely unique and surprising! The first sip is sweet and tangy, but the finish turns slightly salty with herbal notes spreading out — the taste kept shifting within a single glass.

Even if you don't know much about cocktails, you can chat with the bartender and get a recommendation tailored to your taste, so newcomers shouldn't feel intimidated at all!

Melon jamón plate, 23,000 won: the sweet-and-salty snack to order

The Bitters melon jamón plate is ₩23,000 — ripe melon topped with jamón for a sweet-and-salty combo.

Sweet, ripe melon comes out topped with salty jamón, and the first bite instantly felt like a trip to Spain with that sweet-salty combo!

As the melon juice bursts, the savory, salty flavor of the jamón wraps around it, and I just kept picking up piece after piece, sweet-salty, sweet-salty.

Balvenie 14-year on the rocks, paired with chocolate

At Bitters I also ordered a Balvenie 14-year on the rocks, and the bartender paired it with chocolate.

I also ordered the Balvenie 14-year on the rocks, and the bartender said it tastes even better with chocolate and brought some out! The smooth whisky aroma combined with the sweet chocolate was absolutely delicious.
