Whenever I crave something spicy that really wakes up the appetite, I always think of agujjim (braised monkfish stew). Among the countless great restaurants in Songpa, I went to Ttoksuni Agujjim, which carries a whopping 50 years of hands-on tradition.

The large agujjim: boiled monkfish innards and minari
The large Ttoksuni Agujjim comes on a plate so wide it's hard to fit in one photo — like a basin, packed edge to edge with agujjim piled up like a mountain. On top sit chewy monkfish intestine sujeuk (boiled meat) and minari (water celery). The monkfish meat itself is soft and flaky, while the intestine sujeuk has a chewy, bouncy texture that's addictive. The fragrant minari pairs perfectly with the umami-packed sauce, so you really need to eat them together for the full flavor.

How spicy is the mild level?
The monkfish flesh falls apart with a single touch of the chopsticks, generous chunks with a chewy skin that's really appealing. The sauce is packed with umami but never too salty or overly spicy — the mild version is actually less spicy than spicy Shin Ramyun. It's delicious plain, but even better dipped lightly in wasabi soy sauce.

Even someone who usually sticks to grilled fish or spicy grilled dishes would think 'I have to try the plain steamed version and the boiled meat too' — it's clean, savory, and has great texture. Dipped lightly in soy sauce, it's also perfect with a drink.
With the generous monkfish, bean sprouts, whelks, and minari, eating your way through it all leaves you seriously full. Calling it a 'mountain' is really not an exaggeration.

Is Ttoksuni Agujjim Jamsil good for family meals and work dinners?
The side dishes have that homemade feel, the kind you can't stop eating with rice. It's a great fit for family gatherings and group dinners — parking is convenient and the wide interior seating makes it excellent for get-togethers and office dinners. With the food quality guaranteed too, if you pick this place, you'll get nothing but compliments.
The staff and owner were kind, and the puffed rice snack and plum tea served as dessert were a great palate cleanser. If you're looking for agujjim around Jamsil or Olympic Park, Ttoksuni Agujjim Jamsil Direct Branch is the kind of place you'll want to visit again after just one trip.

The self-serve bar and side dishes
Self-serve bar: Side dishes are set up so you can freely grab more if you run out.

The fried pepper chips are a sweet-and-salty, crispy combo that works like an appetizer and dessert side dish in one — but I'm a japchae (glass noodle stir-fry) addict, so I ate a lot of that.

After eating fish, your mouth tends to hold onto the lingering flavor, but Ttoksuni Agujjim serves puffed rice and plum tea as dessert. A cup of plum tea after the meal really cleared my palate nicely.

Takeout comes with a discount
Takeout customers get ₩2,000 off. You can easily book takeout through Naver Reservation as well, so I'd also recommend enjoying this hearty 50-year-old Jeolla-style Ttoksuni Agujjim at home. If you want to enjoy agujjim comfortably at home, using the takeout discount is a great way to do it.
