Mild monkfish stew for two near Olympic Park, 48,000 won: Ttoksuni

In short

Ttoksuni Agujjim Jamsil Direct Branch is a monkfish stew (agujjim) restaurant with 50 years of Jeolla-style tradition, a one-minute walk from Hanseong Baekje Station Exit 3 and right beside Olympic Park in Songpa, Seoul. After an Olympic Park outing with her mom, the writer ordered the medium size for two at 48,000 won at mild spice level 1, and the monkfish was generous, the bean sprouts crisp, and the meal came with perilla seaweed soup and a yeast soy sauce dip. Even at the mildest setting, Ttoksuni Agujjim had enough savory depth to satisfy.

Agujjim meal after a day out at Olympic Park

I went to Olympic Park with my mom for a day out and ended up eating some really delicious agujjim (braised monkfish stew) afterward!!!!

Where is Ttoksuni Agujjim Jamsil Direct Branch near Olympic Park?

Ttoksuni Agujjim Jamsil Direct Branch is about a 1-minute walk from Hanseong Baekje Station Exit 3, so it's easy to find, and it's close enough to Olympic Park that it's a great stop when you're looking for restaurants near Olympic Park.

Interior of the Ttoksuni restaurant near Hanseong Baekje Station

Apparently Ttoksuni is known for its 50-year tradition of Jeolla-style agujjim. It's said to have been loved for a long time in the Gangseo area of Seoul, so I went in with high expectations hahahaha.

The restaurant was bigger than I expected, and the tables weren't cramped, so it was comfortable eating with my mom. It also seemed like a good spot for family meals or larger groups.

Refillable self-serve side dish bar

The side dishes came out, and you can refill them at the self-serve bar! They were all tasty.

Medium-size Ttoksuni Agujjim ordered at mild spice level 1 for two

We ordered the basic agujjim without much thought. One of the great things about Ttoksuni is that you can choose your spice level from 1 to 4!

Close-up of agujjim ordered at spice level 1

I recently had a gastroscopy and was told I have gastritis, so I've been watching spicy food carefully lately. So this time I didn't push my luck and ordered the mild spice level 1. Since agujjim is usually thought of as a spicy dish, I figured level 1 might taste a bit bland, but eating it, that turned out to be completely wrong. It's delicious even without the spice!!!

Perilla seaweed soup, side dishes and yeast soy sauce dip

At Ttoksuni Agujjim Jamsil Direct Branch, ordering the agujjim also gets you a perilla seaweed soup and several sides. This turned out to be more delicious than I expected. The soup has a nutty perilla flavor, and spooning some in between bites of agujjim worked really well together.

A bowl of nutty perilla seaweed soup

Since the agujjim itself is a heavily seasoned dish, sipping the warm, nutty seaweed soup in between bites cleanses the palate nicely. The side dishes that came with it were also good overall. Honestly, I often just pick at the side dishes before the main dish arrives, but this time I kept reaching for them too.

There's also a yeast soy sauce for dipping, and it went really well with the monkfish.

Is level 1 still flavorful? Monkfish and bean sprout texture

The seasoning isn't just about spice — it has quite a deep savory flavor, so even at level 1, you could fully taste what makes agujjim special.

And above all, there was a lot of monkfish meat. Some places serve agujjim that's mostly bean sprouts with just a few pieces of fish, but here the monkfish was quite generous. The meat was plump, and the texture was chewy yet tender — really good.

Plump monkfish meat with crunchy bean sprouts

The seasoning soaked well into the monkfish, so it was tasty eaten alone, and it also paired well with the bean sprouts. Bean sprouts are another important part of agujjim, and I liked the texture here too — not overcooked and mushy, but still crunchy, which kept me reaching for more with each bite of the seasoning.

A piece of monkfish with a chopstick full of bean sprouts — that's the perfect combo!

Sitting with my mom over one bowl of agujjim, piling bean sprouts and monkfish together, sipping the seaweed soup, and eating the sides — before I knew it, the plate was pretty much empty haha.

Since it was level 1, it wasn't too spicy, so it was nice to eat slowly while chatting with my mom. If you usually like spicy food, you could bump it up to a higher level, and if you can't handle spice well like me, or if you're having one of those days when heavy flavors feel like too much, level 1 is more than enough to enjoy.
