Hwamyeong-dong BBQ with an hour weekend wait and ring game: Go Ok-hui
In short
Go Ok-hui Hwamyeong Main Branch is a pork belly restaurant in Hwamyeong-dong, Buk-gu, Busan, where the aged meat is grilled in the kitchen and brought out ready to eat. Arriving just after 5pm on a weekend still meant a one-hour wait, filled with a cup of sikhye (sweet rice punch) and a ring-in-water game that won a free steamed egg. The 700g mid-size set of aged pork belly, ribs and pork skin made for an easy, relaxed meal even with a child at the table.

It had been a genuinely long time, so I headed to Hwamyeong-dong for a good meat dinner to close out the weekend. Even though I hurried over just in case, plenty of people were already waiting.

One-line summary — the weekend wait was long, but the comfort of pre-grilled meat and juicy pork belly made for a perfect dinner.

How long is the weekend wait?
At Go Ok-hui Hwamyeong Main Branch, the wait had already started by just after 5pm on a weekend, and we ended up waiting over an hour. If you're planning to visit, I'd strongly recommend booking through Naver reservations.
Is Go Ok-hui easy to visit with a child?
Go Ok-hui Hwamyeong Main Branch has a separate kids' rice option, and since the meat comes pre-grilled, it's genuinely easy to eat while looking after a child.

Getting there, first impressions and the wait outside
Located in the heart of Hwamyeong-dong, Go Ok-hui is a bustling local BBQ favorite. You don't even need to go looking for it — every weekend evening, the delicious smell fills the alley without fail. It's an easy walk from the station, and the lively atmosphere nearby makes people stop and take notice.
That said, it's so popular that visiting without a reservation can mean a bit of a wait. We arrived just after 5pm and the line had already started, so we had to wait about an hour. But there was never a dull moment — we cooled off with a sip of chilled sikhye (sweet rice punch) set out in front of the store, and even played a nostalgic ring-toss-in-water game. My husband and I gave it our all and won, earning a free steamed egg dish, so the wait actually became a fun memory.
No oil splatter at the table: the dining room atmosphere
After the long wait, the relief of finally sitting down was indescribable. Inside, warm wood-tone décor filled the space, making it more than suitable for a family meal or gathering. Best of all, every table had a vent constantly pulling smoke away, so the interior stayed free of the usual thick smoke and grease smell of a BBQ joint — it felt great the whole time we were there.
As the introduction mentioning the owner's mother's 10 years of effort suggests, guests here never have to sweat over grilling their own meat. The fire and oil stay entirely contained in the kitchen, and the philosophy of placing only a perfectly grilled, clean piece of meat on the customer's table came through in every corner of the space. The biggest appeal was that families with kids and people at work dinners alike could chat comfortably without worrying about their clothes smelling like smoke.

The 700g mid-size set: aged pork grilled in the kitchen
Feeling hungry, we decided on the 700g mid-size set, packed with aged pork belly, ribs, and pork skin. We paired it with a hearty soybean paste stew, which is a must, and a cold drink. As soon as we ordered, the table was neatly filled with side dishes — fresh lettuce for wraps, pungent garlic, chili peppers, and wasabi to bring out the meat's flavor even more, all in a clean, no-frills spread.
The side dishes are set out before the meat arrives. Lettuce for wraps, garlic, chili, wasabi — everything that goes well with the meat, neatly prepared.

A little while later, the main meat arrived from the kitchen already grilled, and it caught the eye instantly. The thickly sliced pork belly was golden on the outside and juicy inside, and the mini grill on the table kept the meat at a gentle temperature so it wouldn't cool down. At most BBQ places, someone's always busy flipping the meat — here, none of that was needed, so we could just pick it up and eat, making the meal much more relaxed. Following the instructions for the best way to enjoy it, I added a touch of wasabi and wrapped it in lettuce, and the burst of juices in my mouth was pure art.
The 700g mid-size set includes:
- Aged pork belly 200g × 2
- Ribs 200g × 1
- Pork skin 100g
- Soybean paste stew
- Rice
- Fluffy steamed egg (service item)

Chewy pork skin and soybean paste stew to finish the meal
As we worked through the main meat, it was time to try the pork skin, slowly warming on the grill. Included in the set, the pork skin turned golden and chewy, and the more we chewed, the more savory and rich it tasted — a great snack for drinks and a nice treat in itself. It made me think I should come back next time without driving, so I can enjoy it properly with a cold beer.

My favorite, pork skin ❤️ After the richness of the meat and skin, the hearty soybean paste stew was what cleaned the palate. It wasn't overly bold, just a mild, deep flavor, and mixing a little rice into the broth made for a truly satisfying, filling dinner. My kid finished a whole bowl of rice too — the overall balance of the food was great, the kind of taste anyone, regardless of age, could enjoy without complaint.

Fluffy steamed egg with soybean paste stew and rice — an unbeatable combo ☺️ The thoughtful service was great 😍 We joined the waiting-line event and won the free steamed egg!!! ❤️ There are all kinds of coupons too, so make sure to grab yours~
