Busan Japanese restaurant with a stroller-friendly room: Shunsaikubo
In short
Shunsaikubo Hwamyeong is a Japanese restaurant in Hwamyeong-dong, Buk-gu, Busan, serving Nagoya-style hitsumabushi (grilled eel rice bowl) and selected year after year for the Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand and the Blue Ribbon. The writer reserved a weekday lunch and ordered the half-portion hitsumabushi, and the wide gaps between tables left room for a stroller and a baby chair. With salad, tempura, seaweed soup and matcha pudding arriving as one full set, Shunsaikubo Hwamyeong made for a light, easy meal with a baby along.

Why Shunsaikubo Hwamyeong needs a reservation even on weekdays

Shunsaikubo is a Hwamyeong-dong favorite that's packed with customers even on a weekday opening run. Walk-ins are possible, but so many people come with reservations that booking ahead means no waiting — much better. Parking is available in the restaurant's building (4 spots), at the Hwamyeong public parking lot (1 hour supported), or roadside next to the restaurant if a spot happens to be open!

The inner room seats up to 10 people for a meal. If you're coming as a group, definitely book ahead!!

Can you bring a baby? Strollers and baby chairs at Shunsaikubo

Shunsaikubo Hwamyeong isn't a big place, but the table spacing is wide, so stroller access is possible! It helps to mention you're bringing a stroller when you reserve. There are baby chairs too, making this a kid-friendly Hwamyeong-dong restaurant. You can visit with your child without worry~~~!

Each table had detailed instructions on how to enjoy the meal the best way. At Michelin or Blue Ribbon restaurants, it's not just about the food — you can feel the care put into even the small details. This is a Hwamyeong-dong restaurant where you can eat feeling well taken care of.
What comes with the half-portion hitsumabushi lunch set
We ordered the hitsumabushi (Nagoya-style eel rice bowl) in a half portion! Last time I had a full portion, it was quite a lot — a half portion felt like plenty for lunch, so this time we went with that :-)

Before the meal, a clean salad to warm things up -!

The hitsumabushi menu comes with salad, Japanese-style tempura, and dessert after the meal. It feels as filling as a full set menu, haha. I used to never eat eggplant at all, but I guess my palate's changed with age — these days I actually find it pretty tasty ... hahahahahaha

A warm seaweed soup came along too — great alongside the eel rice bowl.

The hitsumabushi arrived as a full individual course. Coming out as a single-serving spread like this looks neat and makes for a tidy, comfortable meal.

Even as a half portion, it looked plenty filling.

How the eel rice bowl tastes with wasabi and as ochazuke
Shunsaikubo's hitsumabushi is a traditional Nagoya-style dish reinterpreted for Korean palates! It has that clean, tidy flavor that keeps you coming back again and again and again.

There are several ways to eat it, but my personal favorite is with wasabi! The eel itself has no fishy taste at all, and it's slightly crisp outside while staying soft inside — the texture is the best.

The rice already comes with soy sauce drizzled on, and if it tastes too plain, you can add more soy sauce yourself. I like my food on the milder side, so I ate it just as it was served :-)

Basic is best, in my opinion — it was delicious even just with rice! No stray bones at all, and the chewy yet soft texture was really satisfying.
Eating along with the rice, then pouring on the ochazuke dashi brings a whole new feeling, different from the eel's natural taste! The flavor gets stronger, and you can taste the eel's own flavor even more clearly. It felt like a clean way to wrap up the meal, paired with the ochazuke.

Matcha pudding, and why the writer would return to Shunsaikubo
The matcha pudding for dessert was the perfect finish ..♥ A truly tidy course from start to end! My stomach felt light and comfortable afterward. Coming out as a single-serving spread made it easy to eat, and above all — it was tasty! That's what made it so satisfying. It's close to home so I come often, and it's not hard to visit if you reserve ahead, which makes it even better! Even on weekdays, reserve first!! Highly recommend.
