Visiting Mara Golmok, a mala tang restaurant in Deokcheon-dong, Busan
A bowl of mala tang from Mara Golmok in Deokcheon-dong

I went to Mara Golmok in Deokcheon-dong, Busan. For its 5th anniversary, they repaired the aging facilities and did a professional cleaning, so the interior felt way more pleasant — I skipped delivery this time and went to eat in person. Fresh, varied ingredients meeting that numbing, deeply flavorful spicy spice blend in perfect harmony — this is Deokcheon-dong's go-to mala tang spot.

Where is Mara Golmok, and how far is it from Deokcheon Station?

True to its name (Mara Golmok means "mala alley"), the place sits in an alley with no dedicated parking, so you'll want to park in a nearby public lot. It's about a 5-minute walk from Deokcheon Station Exit 2, so it's also easy to reach by public transit.

I love mala tang and order it by delivery pretty often, but sometimes you just crave a freshly made hot bowl, so I visited Mara Golmok, a well-known spot in Deokcheon-dong, Busan.

It's close to Deokcheon Station, so accessibility is great.

Mara Golmok, the Deokcheon mala tang favorite, just hit its 5th anniversary. After 5 years of love from loyal regulars, the owner did a major overhaul of the space to give customers an even better environment.

Walking in, it felt like a clean, well-organized mala tang restaurant. Each table had a tablet, which made ordering convenient, and the tables and chairs were comfortable, with plenty of room to sit and enjoy the meal.

What's on the self-bar at Mara Golmok

The best part of mala tang is picking your own ingredients, and for its 5th anniversary, Mara Golmok in Deokcheon-dong reportedly expanded the self-bar lineup significantly. So there was a lot to choose from, which made browsing fun.

The self-bar ingredient display at Mara Golmok

From various types of glass noodles to mushrooms and vegetables — all the classic mala tang ingredients were there. Fresh vegetables, chewy fenshi (sweet potato starch noodles), Chinese vermicelli, new jin noodles, an assortment of mushrooms and skewers, and tofu skin — all piled up generously so you could pick to your taste. I liked that none of the ingredients were squashed and everything was kept fresh.

Beef counted by mala tang weight, not per gram

On top of that, what I really liked was that the beef gets charged at the base rate too!!

Usually it's charged per 100g separately, but at Mara Golmok it's calculated by the total mala tang weight, not by beef grams.

Free unlimited rice and disposable aprons

You can also get free unlimited rice refills.

I always eat mala tang with rice — I basically treat mala tang like a side dish, haha. So having free, unlimited rice made the meal even better.

There are aprons too. They're disposable, so it's hygienic.

Last time I went for mala tang, I was wearing light-colored clothes. I figured it'd be fine without an apron, but nope — mala broth splashed on my clothes and it never came out. Ugh.

An apron is a must when eating mala tang.

Mala tang is ₩1,900 per 100g with a ₩6,000 minimum order. Mala xiangguo is ₩3,000 per 100g with a ₩12,000 minimum order. Interestingly, they also have rosé xiangguo — I got curious about how the spicy mala flavor pairs with creamy rosé sauce, so I'm planning to try it on my next visit.

Mala tang topped with corn noodles and beef

How did the mala tang at Mara Golmok taste?

My bowl came out loaded with the generous ingredients I'd picked, plus plenty of beef, all cooked up. The rich mala aroma filled the bowl, and my favorite corn noodles were piled high on top — too hot or not, I dove in with a full bite.

Usually I take a spoonful of broth first, but this time the bean sprouts and other ingredients looked too good, so I started there instead. The cooking level of the ingredients was spot-on — the corn noodles hadn't gone soft, the bean sprouts still had a good crunch, everything was cooked just right.

The deep, savory broth blended with mala's signature spiciness and numbing spices, and every spoonful filled my mouth with that mala aroma — this is exactly why people eat mala tang, haha.

Mala tang paired with a bowl of rice

Paired with a bowl of rice, it's the ultimate combo for polishing off even the broth. The numbing Sichuan pepper flavor balanced with just the right amount of spice, and I ate it up happily.

The ingredients were cooked just right, and eating through them made me curious about how the other ingredients would taste, so I've already secretly picked my next visit date in my head, haha.
