One day last week, a friend and I planned to watch Spider-Man: Brand New Day at Lotte Cinema in Hongdae... and had a deep debate over what to eat for lunch, since I'd been eating out so much lately that nothing sounded appealing 😇 What do you do in that situation? Right, for a Korean, Korean food is always the cheat code — something with a spicy, savory broth would hit the spot. So I searched around and Bap Jangin Hongdae Branch caught my eye right away, so off I went 🔥

Bap Jangin Hongdae Branch is already famous among people searching for good Korean food in Hongdae, and it's always popular ✨ It's a signature rice place where you can enjoy hearty, deep-flavored stews and grilled bulgogi to your heart's content! We arrived a bit early, around 11am, and there were already quite a few people eating 👀 By the time we finished, the place was almost completely full, no joke.. And because it has that neat, home-cooked feel, I noticed a lot of foreign customers too..? Maybe they were craving that home-cooked feeling too, haha..

I got a little excited over the clever little details, haha.. The water bottle is a mini version of those big jerry cans, which was cute enough on its own, but then the sesame oil bottle was shaped like a honey bear, and I got hit with a second wave of cuteness 💘 We could order easily via the tablet at each table. Since I wanted both stew and bulgogi, I ordered the solo lunch set without hesitation, and my friend went for the savory, spicy sundubu jjageuli!

Before long, my solo lunch set was served first, and just the look of it made my mouth water — honestly, if you're Korean, there's no way your mouth doesn't water at this 🤷🏻‍♀️ The bulgogi was tender with a gentle charcoal-grilled aroma wafting through, and the moment I took a bite, I couldn't help but react with 'ah, this is the taste.' True to its reputation as a Hongdae kimchi jjigae spot, the stew was packed with thick meat and Spam, making the broth incredibly rich and spicy~ Piling seaweed flakes on the rice and mixing it all up with the spicy broth and meat — yes, this was it, the Korean flavor I'd been craving..!

How does the sundubu jjageuli taste?

My friend's sundubu jjageuli was loaded with soft, silky tofu and plenty of meat in the broth, bursting with umami! The rich, thick, jjageuli-style seasoning had soaked all the way into the tofu, so scooping up a big spoonful, laying it over rice, and mixing it together made for something so soft it went down with barely any chewing needed — I totally fell for it 🫢 Just spicy enough and savory too, a well-rounded Hongdae-style jjageuli ✨

Why Bap Jangin works when you are tired of eating out
