Yeonnam-dong bakery basil tomato bagel and rusk takeout: Mandong Jegwa
In short
Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is a bakery on Yeonhui-ro in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul, an 8-minute walk from Hongik Univ. Station. On a late-evening visit the writer packed four items to go — garlic baguette, basil tomato, rusk, and ssukteok-ssukteok mugwort bread — and reheating the garlic baguette let the garlic butter soak through the slits for a crisp crust and a moist center. At Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch, reach for the garlic baguette first and pick the rest to taste.

The four breads picked at Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch
The signature here is the garlic baguette. It's long and big enough for two people to share comfortably. Reheat it and garlic butter seeps out through every slit — crisp outside, moist inside.
The basil tomato is a bagel with a crunchy topping on the outside that gives a nice crackle with each bite, and the cream cheese and sun-dried tomato inside are salty and tangy together. The rusk is crisp like a cracker, and the mugwort rice cake bread has a strong mugwort aroma — with all four picked up, it was easy to share among people with different tastes.
This Yeonnam-dong bakery is well known as a Hongdae spot, and it was perfect for taking home and reheating.

Where Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is and when it opens
Mandong Jegwa is visible right from the main Yeonhui-ro street.

It's open every day from 11am to 9pm.

What's left on the Mandong Jegwa shelves late in the evening
Bread is split between the center display and the shelves along both walls. Visiting late in the evening meant not much was left, but you just load a tray with what you want and pay at the counter inside.

Each bread has a small card with its name and price, which makes choosing easy.

What was left ranged from chili sausage and tortilla to ciabatta and yakbap bread (sweet rice cake bread).

How to order the bagels and try the samples
For some breads like the bagels, you don't load a tray yourself — just tell the staff how many you want when you pay, and they'll get them for you.

They cut pieces for tasting, so you can try before you choose.

The baguettes are lined up long on a tray like this. I picked up a garlic baguette.

Mandong Jegwa's paper bag — everything is packed in a paper bag, which made it easy to carry even with several items.

How the garlic baguette, basil tomato, rusk and mugwort bread taste
What I ordered: garlic baguette, basil tomato, rusk, and mugwort rice cake bread — four in total. Each piece was big, so laid out together it made quite a spread.

Rusk — not hard at all, more of a soft crispness that's easy to eat. Sweet with a nutty note too — a real winner!

The mugwort rice cake bread has big chunks of almond in it. As the photo shows, just one piece feels heavy and packed full — more than it looks.
Reheating the garlic baguette brings the flavor right back to life. The garlic butter soaks into every slit, keeping it moist.

The garlic flavor isn't overpowering — it rises up nutty alongside the butter, so I kept reaching for more.

Mugwort rice cake bread — the mugwort flavor and aroma are subtle, which makes it a good fit for parents too.

Basil tomato — a bagel with a crunchy topping on top that crackles with each bite.
Split it in half and there's basil cream cheese and tomato inside — the cheese is salty and the tomato's tanginess works well chewed together.
Is Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch worth the trip?
Reheat the garlic baguette and the outside turns crisp while the inside stays moist, bringing out the garlic flavor even more. The basil tomato, split in half with the cream cheese, matched well with the tangy tomato. The rusk is sweet and crisp, great with coffee, and the mugwort rice cake bread has both mugwort aroma and rice cake inside for a satisfying chew. With so many bread types to choose from, it was fun picking, and easy to pack up — a Yeonnam-dong bakery and Hongdae spot worth the visit.
- Reheat the garlic baguette and garlic butter soaks into every slit for a crisp outside and moist inside — the first thing to grab here
- Basil tomato, rusk, and mugwort rice cake bread round out a varied lineup you can pick to your taste
- Good for takeout after a weekend outing or as a housewarming gift — a Yeonnam-dong bakery and Hongdae spot
