Paju Heyri donut café packed on a public holiday: Heuksadang

I went to Heyri Village in Paju and stopped by Heuksadang, which is famous for being a large café. The space itself is big, but what it's really known for is its donuts. There were actually people lined up just to get donuts to go, so I could tell it was really popular. We had coffee and dessert there, and personally the pistachio donut was my favorite.

Heuksadang is located inside Heyri Village in Paju, so it was a nice stop while wandering around the village.

Heuksadang was quite large from the outside. Walking in, the space was spacious with a variety of seating, so it seemed like it could handle a lot of visitors comfortably.

Public holiday crowds inside Heuksadang, and the move to the terrace

Maybe because I visited on a public holiday, it was really crowded. The space itself is big, but with so many visitors, the inside felt pretty chaotic.

So instead of eating inside, we moved to the terrace seating.

If the weather's decent, eating on the terrace isn't bad at all.

A lot of people were enjoying coffee inside, but there were also a surprising number of takeout customers.

It's a large café with a split-level structure across the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors.

Why Heuksadang is known as a donut café

The thing Heuksadang is most known for is its donuts. There were more varieties than I expected, and each one looked delicious. The crème brûlée donut is apparently the most popular item, and sure enough, when I visited, there was a long line of people waiting just to buy donuts to take home.

The pistachio donut at Heuksadang: light rather than greasy

We picked the pistachio donut. Regular donuts can feel greasy and heavy, sometimes a bit much after a few bites, but Heuksadang's donut was surprisingly light. It felt more like eating baked bread than a fried donut, which I personally liked even more.

The pistachio cream was nutty and smooth, and it paired really well with the donut. It wasn't too sweet or rich, so it went nicely with coffee too. Next time I want to try the crème brûlée donut since it's supposedly the most popular.

Honeycomb bingsu served with a whole piece of honeycomb

Since it was a hot day, we also ordered the honeycomb bingsu (shaved ice). It looked incredibly generous — a milk snow-flake shaved ice piled high, practically overflowing with granola. On top sat a whole piece of sweet honeycomb. Taking a bite of the honeycomb gave a rich, sweet honey flavor,

and eating it together with the soft milk shaved ice, the sweet and nutty flavors matched really well. There was so much granola that it added a nice crunchy texture too. If you like sweet desserts, this one will satisfy you!

Heuksadang's Americano: nutty, with no sourness

For coffee, we ordered a hot Americano. I'm not really a fan of coffee with acidity, and Heuksadang's coffee used beans with a nutty flavor and no sourness, so it suited my taste well.

Heuksadang in short: is it worth a stop in Heyri?

If you're looking for a large café in Heyri Village, Paju, Heuksadang is worth stopping by at least once. The donuts in particular were really good — light rather than greasy, so they were easier to eat than typical donuts, and the pistachio cream was nutty and satisfying. The most popular item is apparently the crème brûlée donut, so I'll have to try it next time. The honeycomb bingsu was also generous with a whole piece of honeycomb and plenty of granola, making it a great summer dessert, and the coffee's nutty, sourness-free style paired well with the desserts.
