Gyeongju walnut pastries for a guesthouse breakfast: 24-mix, Buja Hodu

In short

Buja Hodu is a walnut pastry (hodu-gwaja) shop on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk, where each pastry is baked in store around one whole walnut. The 24-piece mix arrives individually wrapped in a different color for each flavor, so it works with coffee back at the guesthouse and the leftovers go straight into the freezer, and Buja Hodu also does holiday bojagi wrapping and Smart Store courier delivery. An easy choice for a Gyeongju souvenir gift set.

Honestly speaking as a Gyeongju souvenir gift set haha, this beats other bread gifts. It's a walnut pastry, but a whole walnut goes into each one, so it feels premium — snacks these days can feel like too much, but this wasn't overwhelming, it keeps well in the freezer, and there were lots of flavors.

Where is Buja Hodu and where do you park? The Hwangnidan-gil public lot

Buja Hodu (부자호두) is right inside Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju, so we parked at the Hwangnidan-gil public parking lot and wandered around before heading in~ No parking right in front of the shop!

Since it's tucked inside Hwangnidan-gil, we were walking with our group and went 'oh, walnut pastries?' and just walked in.

Especially since it's holiday season right now, this is great as a Gyeongju souvenir gift set — they can wrap it in bojagi (traditional wrapping cloth) for the holidays, which felt way better than a predictable gift.

Inside Buja Hodu: can you sit and eat there?

Buja Hodu doesn't have a dedicated indoor eating area, just some foldable tables set up outside. Inside, they were making the walnut pastries by hand.

Ta-da~ we walked in and they were making the pastries right there in the shop and packaging them, and I thought, wow, this place is the real deal. There's no indoor space to eat there though.

There were these little foldable tables set up outside~! I went there specifically to buy Gyeongju souvenirs so I didn't really sit and eat, but they had various drinks too, like the traditional ssanghwa tea (herbal tea) or a walnut ice cream affogato.

Buja Hodu's menu board, including a low-sugar red bean filling

Buja Hodu's menu board has original, mix, and various other flavors, plus a separate low-sugar menu. We ordered the 24-piece mix.

Ta-da, here's the menu board! There were various flavors like original and mix!! And there was a low-sugar menu too, which felt great! Desserts these days are always a bit of a worry, but with big nuts packed in ><, plus a variety of flavors and low-sugar options, it was so nice to be able to eat a range of things. We ordered the 24-piece mix.

Why Buja Hodu works as a Gyeongju souvenir gift set: wrapping and delivery

Buja Hodu's 24-piece mix set looked premium both outside and inside the packaging, and with 100% domestic rice and 24 pieces inside, it was perfect for buying as a Gyeongju souvenir gift set. Besides in-store pickup, they also offer courier delivery and Smart Store purchase.

We brought the whole set home and opened it up, and both the outer and inner packaging were so nice. I thought if you add the bojagi wrap on top of this, it would be absolutely amazing.

Packaging with courier delivery and Smart Store purchase information

Apparently courier delivery and Smart Store purchase are both possible too~! Since we were already in Gyeongju, we just grabbed it while walking around Hwangnidan-gil, which was more convenient.

Ta-da~ 24 pieces made with 100% domestic rice, truly perfect for a Gyeongju souvenir gift set. This might just become famous as a Gyeongju dessert too ><

Individually wrapped walnut pastries in different colors by flavor

We ordered a bunch of different flavors and thought we might mix them up, but the packaging was slightly different colors for each flavor, so I went 'oh~'!!! And inside, everything was individually wrapped so nothing bumped together, which made it more hygienic and clean to eat. (I've got the leftovers in the freezer right now haha)

One whole walnut inside: the first bite is the best part

Buja Hodu's walnut pastries look like they each have one whole walnut packed inside. The shell is thin and the filling is packed full, so it was really satisfying to eat.

But honestly, more than the outer packaging, the real 'wow' moment was that first bite. Can you see the walnut? It's like a whole walnut is stuffed in there! The shell is thin and it's packed full inside, so the satisfaction level while eating was through the roof!!!

You can even see a bit of the walnut peeking out from the outside, and the walnut piece was just the right size, so it was delicious to eat. I want to eat more already hahahaha

Several bite-sized walnut pastries

A guesthouse breakfast snack: the pea cream cheese is my top pick

Buja Hodu's walnut pastries are bite-sized snacks that were great to eat at the guesthouse without needing to prep anything, and they went well with coffee, so they were perfect as a breakfast substitute. My top pick was the pea cream cheese.

We came back to the guesthouse and had them as a snack with everyone. Since they're bite-sized, you don't need to prepare anything separately, and they go well with coffee, so they were perfect for breakfast.

Pea cream cheese flavor walnut pastry

My top pick is the pea cream cheese~ the pea filling isn't too sweet, and with the cream cheese mixed in, the flavor balance was great, and since the walnut itself is so big, it felt like a Gyeongju dessert with less guilt.

The red bean one is low-sugar too, so it felt light to eat!! I think it'd be a good gift to pass along as a Gyeongju souvenir to anyone watching their sugar intake.

Final verdict on Buja Hodu

Buja Hodu is a Gyeongju Hwangnidan-gil dessert shop we happened to walk into, and the packaging is so nice that pickup is available in Gyeongju, but nationwide courier delivery through Smart Store is also possible — but packaging isn't all there is, because this shop truly packs in a whole walnut and generous filling in each pastry, so it's a place you can eat happily~ Stop by if you're in Gyeongju~
