A Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil where the kids ate well too: Dongyang Baekban

My family goes to Gyeongju about once a month, and every time we do, we seem to end up on Hwangridan-gil. This time I was craving Korean food, so while looking for a Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil we could take the kids to, we ended up at the Gyeongju branch of Dongyang Baekban.

Whether there'd be something for the kids to eat, and whether it would suit our taste too, was my main criteria for choosing this place.

Dongyang Baekban on Hwangridan-gil: the tile-roofed exterior

Dongyang Baekban has a tile roof paired with wooden door frames, so it caught my eye as I was walking along Hwangridan-gil.

There was a menu board with food photos at the entrance too. I liked being able to check what they served before going in.

Since it was a meal with the kids, I couldn't just look at what I wanted to eat. Once again, while picking a Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil to bring the kids to, I checked the kids' menu first.

Inside Dongyang Baekban and how ordering works

Inside, window seats, soft lighting, and jar decorations caught my eye. The atmosphere suited the Korean menu so well I thought the interior was really pretty too.

There was an ordering touchscreen on the table, so we could pick dishes while looking at photos of the menu.

I came looking for a Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil focused mainly on the food for the kids, but the space itself was pretty too, which I loved.

Why we chose Dongyang Baekban: dishes kids can eat

Honestly, if it were just chicken stew, I don't think we would've gone this time. We went because they also had grilled fish and tteokgalbi — a Hwangridan-gil spot ★ Dongyang Baekban ★

I liked that adults and kids could each pick their own dishes. What we ordered at Dongyang Baekban: Sumi chicken stew 28,000 won, egg rice 3,500 won, cheese tteokgalbi 6,000 won.

The cheese tteokgalbi came with rice, and there was cheese melted over the tteokgalbi.

The egg rice had a halved soy-marinated egg on top, and thankfully it wasn't too salty either, so the kids ate it well!!

Side dishes included diced radish kimchi, seasoned bean sprouts, and black beans — my second kid demolished the bean sprouts... I think she actually ate more bean sprouts than tteokgalbi :-D

Sumi chicken stew, 28,000 won: boneless and easy to share

Dongyang Baekban's Sumi chicken stew came out pot and all, set on the burner at the table. It's already fully cooked, so you can just dig right in..!!

With chicken and vegetables in the broth, it made a full spread alongside the kids' food. According to the menu description, it's boneless chicken with a mix of herbal broth and bone broth, plus Sumi potatoes and vegetables.

Since you don't have to pick out bones, it felt like an easy dish to eat during a meal. Tasting it, the seasoning wasn't too sharp at all.

That said, it wasn't bland either — we ended up scraping the pot clean. Looking for a Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil to bring the kids to, the adults' meal turned out satisfying too.

Egg rice and cheese tteokgalbi both kids finished

Both kids ate well with the tteokgalbi and egg rice. Seeing them eat so well made me feel like we'd picked the right dishes.

We enjoyed the chicken stew, and the kids ate their own dishes well too, so Dongyang Baekban is a place I'd want to visit again ★★

Next time we're in Gyeongju and thinking of a Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil to bring the kids to, this is a place I'd want to stop by again.

Dongyang Baekban with two kids: the verdict

• They have grilled fish and tteokgalbi on the menu, making it a good spot to visit with kids!
• The chicken stew wasn't too sharply seasoned, so we enjoyed it a lot.
• Both kids ate the tteokgalbi and egg rice well, so I'd like to go back.
