There are so many pretty cafés and great restaurants around Gwangalli these days, aren't there? I was meeting a friend for the first time in a while and looking for somewhere with good food where we could talk at leisure, so we went to Famous Benny Gwangalli Branch. What's the atmosphere at Famous Benny Gwangalli Branch like?

The clean, wood-toned interior was what stood out. The wooden walls and furniture blend together nicely for a warm feel, and the tables aren't crammed together, so it was comfortable to eat and chat with my friend. We sat on the 2nd floor, and maybe because sunlight comes in by the windows, the afternoon atmosphere was especially nice.

Personally I love a clean brunch café like this, and I liked that it doesn't feel overdecorated, just a place where you can sit down and eat comfortably. The staff brought the food right to our table. They also told us we could leave our dishes on the table after eating and they'd clear them, which is quietly convenient. It felt like a spot where you can have brunch and then linger and chat like at any café!

Egg in Hell that won over a friend who didn't fancy shakshuka

The first thing we tried at Famous Benny Gwangalli Branch was the Egg in Hell (shakshuka, eggs poached in tomato sauce). It's a tomato-based sauce with egg and cheese, and my friend, who was reluctant at first, ended up eating the most of it.

Honestly, my friend didn't want Egg in Hell at first. I said I wanted shakshuka and ordered it, and she went, "I'm not really feeling shakshuka?" But once she tried it... haha, she said she'd have really regretted it if we hadn't ordered it.

Soft egg and cheese sit in the tomato-based sauce, and arugula and seeds on top add texture. The crisply toasted bread that comes with it is perfect for dipping in the sauce. The sauce itself is so good that you keep dipping. The friend who said she wasn't feeling it ended up being one of the most enthusiastic eaters. You really don't know about food until you try it, haha. If you're choosing brunch at Famous Benny, I definitely recommend the Egg in Hell 🌟

The Famous Benny, with bacon

The Famous Benny has a name that sounds like the signature dish at Famous Benny Gwangalli Branch, and you can choose bacon or salmon. We went with bacon, and with avocado and nuts added, the textures were varied.

Between croissant-like bread there's bacon, avocado, egg, vegetables and nuts, so it looked generous too.

I especially love the avocado and bacon combo, and with nuts added, the bits of crunch here and there were really nice. Soft avocado and egg, salty bacon and crisply toasted bread all come together, so you get several flavors in one bite. The nuts also meant it wasn't just soft and mild: it was nutty with lots of texture, which I liked. I was glad I ordered the bacon.

Extra-order grilled mushrooms, the best dish of the day

If I had to pick the dish I personally enjoyed most at Famous Benny Gwangalli Branch that day, it would be the grilled mushrooms. We hadn't planned to order them and added them on, but after one bite I thought, "We have to order this!"

Several kinds of mushrooms are grilled golden, with the mushrooms' aroma and texture nicely preserved and just the right seasoning, so you keep reaching for more.

If you like mushrooms, I really recommend it. I'd thought of it as just a side, but it was so much better than expected that my friend and I kept picking at it. It's also good for nibbling between bites of the brunch dishes. If you visit Famous Benny, please try the grilled mushrooms too!! If I go back, this is what I'd order first.

Coffee transfusion for brunch: Americano and strawberry latte

For drinks at Famous Benny Gwangalli Branch, we ordered an Americano and a strawberry latte. The strawberry latte was rich and sweet, with quite a lot of strawberry syrup.

I had the Americano, and on a weekday afternoon, coffee with brunch was just right. I got a proper coffee transfusion, literally. I also tried a sip of the strawberry latte my friend ordered, and with that much strawberry syrup the flavor was strong and sweet. If you like sweet drinks, I think you'd like it.

If you want a relaxed brunch in Gwangalli

Every dish we had at Famous Benny Gwangalli Branch that day was satisfying. I think it's a good place to visit when you meet a friend in Gwangalli and want a tasty brunch, or want to spend relaxed time in a clean space that isn't too noisy.

Gwangalli has plenty of cafés, but if you're looking for somewhere that does brunch properly, Famous Benny Gwangalli Branch seems like a solid choice. I think it would also suit a date in Millak-dong, anyone planning a date route near Gwangalli, or anyone who wants brunch as a late breakfast-cum-lunch on the weekend.
