Sokcho crab shop: red crab ramyeon from leftover legs, Yes Susan

Yes Susan is a seafood shop specializing in snow crab and red crab takeout, located at the entrance of Sokcho Central Market (Tourist Seafood Market) in Sokcho, Gangwon. On a weekday, a family of three took home a 3-red-crab box and 2 crab-shell fried rice in a cooler bag, then boiled the leftover legs and top shells into red crab ramyeon. For trimmed red crab eaten comfortably at home for less than a restaurant charges, Yes Susan takeout is a good-value choice.

Pork galbi BBQ in Yongin, 300g a serving: Daejisikdang Mohyeon

Daejisikdang Mohyeon is a Korean BBQ restaurant specializing in Berkshire K pork in Mohyeon-eup, Cheoin-gu, Yongin, near Lakeside CC. After enjoying the lunch special, the writer returned for 2 servings of marinated pork galbi grilled by the owner, plus doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles). With 300g per serving and refillable side dishes, Daejisikdang Mohyeon left two diners very full.

Gangnam Station café for one: decaf salt cream coffee, Bakerist Brown

Bakerist Brown is a large bakery café on the main street by Gangnam Station in Seoul, open from basement level 1 up to the 3rd floor. After an eye exam, the writer stopped by alone for a salt cream coffee switched to decaf and a cream horn pastry (sora cream pastry), then took home a box of 8 Gangnam Sand cookies. Bakerist Brown is worth recommending to anyone looking for a spacious café near Gangnam Station with a wide range of breads and desserts.

Sokcho market deodeok shoulder chicken for my parents: Seomin Gapbu

Seomin Gapbu Sijang Dakjip (속초시장닭강정) is a cauldron-fried dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken) shop in the chicken alley of Sokcho Jungang Market in Sokcho, right next to Jungang Dakgangjeong. On a day trip to Sokcho, the writer took home deodeok (bonnet bellflower root) dakgangjeong made with domestic boneless shoulder meat; opened at home for a late dinner, it was still crisp, and even the writer, who rarely eats deodeok, found it pleasantly sweet. If the usual dakgangjeong has gotten old, the deodeok dakgangjeong at Seomin Gapbu Sijang Dakjip is a refreshing change.

Sokcho egg tart bakery: Friday sell-out, chocolate financier, Doris

Doris Patisserie (도리스파티세리) is a pink-signed bakery for egg tarts and baked treats inside Sokcho Central Market in Sokcho, Gangwon. On a weekday Friday the writer collected an order texted in the day before, while many walk-in customers left empty-handed because everything but reserved orders had sold out; the haul was plain egg tarts, fig cream cheese and chocolate financiers, and lemon madeleines. At Doris Patisserie, booking ahead is the way to skip the wait and get exactly what you want.

Pangyo restaurant for spice-averse Mom: seafood soup pasta, Tobeu Nain

Tobeu Nain Pangyo Main Branch (토브나인 판교 본점) is a wood-fired pizza, pasta and brunch restaurant in Sasong-dong, Seongnam, just before Pangyo Station. On this repeat visit, the writer booked a second-floor table with her mom, tried Tobeu Nain's signature spicy seafood soup pasta for the first time and paired it with the fig quattro formaggi wood-fired pizza. Even though the soup pasta uses a tom yum sauce, it had almost no spice flavor, so mother and daughter (who both dislike strong spices) loved it, and the verdict is to order it every time.

Popcorn Oreo bingsu truck and cream shrimp at Jamsil: Bingdongdaeng

Bingdongdaeng is a yellow bingsu (shaved ice dessert) food truck outside Outfield Ticket Gate 1 at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Songpa, Seoul. On game day at the Jamsil Baseball Stadium outfield food trucks, the writer ate Station cream shrimp, Bingdongdaeng chocolate Oreo bingsu and Ippeun Yeou Hot Dog, and the Bingdongdaeng bingsu, made with milk ice, still hadn't melted about 20 minutes after takeaway. The Jamsil Baseball Stadium outfield food trucks are grouped in one spot with shorter lines than the shops inside, which makes them a good choice for picking up several snacks at once.

Sangdaewon Market bossam restaurant, Seongnam: special set for one

Bossam Ae Kalguksu Seongnam Sangdaewon Branch is a gabrisal (pork shoulder cap) bossam and kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant near Sangdaewon Market in Jungwon-gu, Seongnam. Remembering the good value at another branch, the writer went to the Sangdaewon Branch with Mom for one special bossam set and a separately ordered makguksu (buckwheat noodles). The gabrisal bossam was moist and the green onion kimchi and geotjeori (fresh kimchi) were especially good, though the makguksu noodles felt slightly soggy. Bossam Ae Kalguksu Sangdaewon is a good-value bossam spot where even a bossam set in the ₩10,000 range comes with kalguksu.

Seokmuneo Yongin Bojeong (석문어 용인보정점) is an octopus restaurant on the Bojeong-dong café street in Giheung-gu, Yongin. After a stop at Shinsegae Department Store, the writer and their mom ordered the weekday lunch special: stir-fried octopus and pork for 2, plus a clam and minari kalguksu that can be ordered as a single serving and comes with fried porridge included. On this second visit, Seokmuneo Yongin Bojeong was still satisfying, a good-value lunch spot in Bojeong-dong.

Chowol, Gwangju Korean restaurant: smoky spicy pork add-on, Bomseol

Bomseol (봄설) is a Korean set-meal restaurant in Jiwol-ri, Chowol-eup, Gwangju, Gyeonggi, now running under a new name after Gangminjuui Deulbap (강민주의들밥). Ordering the Bomseol set for 2 plus smoky stir-fried spicy pork (jeyuk bokkeum) brought stone-pot rice, braised pollock, unlimited cheonggukjang soybean stew and barley rice, and self-refill side dishes. Bomseol keeps the flavor and generous portions of the Gangminjuui Deulbap days, making it a good Gwangju pick for a meal with parents.

Suwon sushi buffet with grilled chicken feet and salmon: Kuu Kuu Gold

Kuu Kuu Gold Suwon City Hall Branch is a renovated sushi buffet at 11 Gwongwang-ro 139beon-gil, Gwonseon-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi, with a direct-flame grill corner called Yukhaejinmi (육해진미) that regular Kuu Kuu branches don't have. The writer visited for weekday lunch and tried self-grilled chicken feet and marinated meat, fresh salmon sushi, sweet potato pizza and bead ice cream, and was happy with both the variety and the sushi quality. Kuu Kuu Gold costs more than a regular Kuu Kuu, but the wider menu makes a Kuu Kuu Gold branch the one to choose.
