Goyang Chinese restaurant weekend drive: shelled clam jjamppongbap

In short

Jjamppong Jijeon Seooreung Branch is a Chinese restaurant with a large private parking lot on Seooreung-ro in Deogyang-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi. On a weekend drive the writer ordered jijeon jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup), jijeon jjamppongbap (the same soup with rice) and glutinous rice tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), and the clams and mussels came fully shelled, so every bite could be scooped up with a spoon. With free rice and a self-serve ade bar, Jjamppong Jijeon made for a satisfying family meal out.

With the weekend here, I wanted a drive and a craving for spicy soup hit, so I went to Jjamppong Jijeon Seooreung Branch. I really love jjamppong and have tried a lot of famous spots, but this place impressed me across the board — size, amenities, and taste — so I wanted to share it.

Parking at Jjamppong Jijeon Seooreung: easy even for new drivers?

Jjamppong Jijeon Seooreung Branch has a very large private lot in front of and beside the building. The address is 441 Seooreung-ro, Deogyang-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi (432-15 Yongdu-dong), open daily 10:00–22:00 with last order at 21:30.

Driving down Seooreung-ro, the clean, big sign catches your eye. Parking is always the biggest worry when hunting for restaurants out of town, but the spacing was generous and there was staff managing it, so even at peak time I parked stress-free. Ideal conditions for anyone coming by car.

Inside Jjamppong Jijeon: wrapped pickled radish, apron and hair tie

Stepping inside Jjamppong Jijeon Seooreung Branch, the high ceilings and wide windows made it feel completely open, not cramped at all. The tables were spaced generously too, which looked great for a family meal or a gathering.

What impressed me most was the hygiene care. As soon as we sat down they brought pickled radish, jjacai (pickled mustard tuber), and bottled water — the pickled radish was thinly sliced and individually packaged, which felt much more hygienic. They even gave us disposable aprons and hair ties, a thoughtful touch that put me in a good mood before I'd even eaten.

How does the jijeon jjamppong taste? Shelled clams and mussels

For this visit we ordered the signature dishes of Jjamppong Jijeon Seooreung Branch: jijeon jjamppong and glutinous rice tangsuyuk.

Jijeon Jjamppong

As soon as the jjamppong arrived, the savory charred-wok aroma and deep-colored broth caught my eye. The biggest advantage of Jjamppong Jijeon is that all the seafood shells — mussels, clams — come already removed. No need to dirty your hands picking out shells, you can just dig in with chopsticks straight away, which was so convenient. Made with 100% domestic red pepper powder, the broth wasn't heavy or murky but clean and spicy, with a deep meaty stock flavor underneath.

Jijeon Jjamppongbap

First impression of the broth: heavy, smoky, deep meat stock Look and aroma: as soon as the bowl arrives, a sharp, heavy charred-wok smell wafts up. This isn't a light, clear seafood broth — it's a deep, dark red high-heat stir-fried broth. First sip: the moment it hits your tongue you let out an "mmm, that's deep" sound. A thick, dense stock that seems simmered from pork base coats the tongue, followed by a heavy, sharp spiciness that's not artificial capsaicin heat but the distinctive punch of charred red pepper powder.

Texture and mix of ingredients: seafood and meat in savory harmony Prepped seafood (shellfish): the signature of jijeon jjamppong is clams and mussels with all their shells already removed. No fuss picking shells — every spoonful gives you plump, chewy clam meat. Pork and scallop: pork sliced along the grain adds savoriness and umami to the broth, and the occasional bite of scallop meat adds a pleasant sweetness.

The life and texture of the vegetables: napa cabbage, onion, wood ear mushroom and more are stir-fried at high heat until wilted but still add a sweet vegetable essence to the broth. Amid the spice, the natural sweetness of the vegetables buffers the heat. The highlight unique to jjamppongbap: the harmony of glass noodles and rice

Glutinous rice tangsuyuk with white sauce and shredded onion

Glutinous Rice Tangsuyuk

Next came the glutinous rice tangsuyuk, wearing a pale, light-colored batter. Crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside thanks to the glutinous rice — the texture was fantastic. The sauce came in a white, clear style with a generous pile of thinly shredded onion on top, and eating it together with the tangsuyuk cut through any greasiness, so I could keep eating happily until the last bite.

Self-bar tips: free rice and ade to take away

On the way out after the meal, Jjamppong Jijeon's signature free dessert corner was waiting.

  • Free rice service: there's a rice cooker at the self-bar in the middle of the store, so you can help yourself to as much rice as you want. Pouring it into the leftover, deep jjamppong broth after finishing the noodles makes for a perfect finish.
  • Full café-style drinks: there's a coffee bean machine as well as a fridge stocked full of ice cups. You can fill up ice cups with blueberry ade, green grape ade, and more to take away — no need for a separate café run.
