After-work 7pm dinner at a Jeonpo-dong Korean restaurant: Hyangtaek
In short
Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch is a Korean restaurant in Jeonpo-dong, Busanjin, Busan, where each dish comes as a complete single-person set. Arriving at 7pm with a friend, the writer ordered one mackerel thistle rice and one yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef mixed rice), each served with soup, gopchang gim (seasoned laver), gungchae and jeotgal (salted seafood), so each person had a full meal of their own. Mild and ingredient-forward, the table at Hyangtaek tasted like an elevated version of home cooking.

Where Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch is and how to walk there
Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch is a Korean restaurant on the 1st floor of 42-1 Seojeon-ro, Busanjin-gu, Busan. This is my review of Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch, a Jeonpo-dong Korean restaurant that's become a real local favorite!

It was about a 6–7 minute walk from Exit 8 of Seomyeon Station, tucked into the Jeonpo area — a bit behind where the old NC Department Store used to be, I think?

They show you photos of the menu right away — instant mouthwatering...

Such a neat, proper Korean-food vibe!!
Arriving at 7pm: last order at Hyangtaek is 7:30
Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch is open daily 11:00–20:00 with last order at 19:30. I got there around 7pm, and with last order at 7:30 and closing at 8, it seemed like a comfortable spot to meet up right after work!

Inside Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch: mood and seating
Inside, Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch is done up in wood tones and white, with about 8 tables of 4. I only managed a few partial shots since there were other diners around, but you get a clean, hanjeongsik (traditional set-meal)-style feeling from the wood and white. Since this place hasn't been open all that long, it still has that fresh, tidy, proper feel to it??

The Hyangtaek menu: 5 main dishes and 4 side dishes
Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch runs on a one-dish-per-person, single-menu setup — simple is best! Here's the menu!
Main dishes at Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch
- Mackerel thistle rice — pan-grilled mackerel paired with fragrant gondre (thistle) rice (signature dish)
- Eggplant doenjang bowl — grilled eggplant with a savory house-made doenjang (soybean paste) sauce
- Yukhoe bibimbap — raw beef yukhoe mixed with assorted vegetables and house seasoning
- Chamnamul squid bowl — fragrant chamnamul (wild aromatic herb) with spicy stir-fried squid
- Herring roe bibim noodles — noodles tossed with popping herring roe and a house sauce
Side dishes to share at Hyangtaek
- Grilled deodeok (mountain root) and mushrooms
- Mushroom platter
- Galbi platter
- Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi
Five meal dishes and about four sides. My friend and I ordered one mackerel thistle rice and one yukhoe bibimbap haha

Every table has a card explaining how to eat it best, plus utensils and cups. The recommended way: mix it up, wrap it in gim (seaweed), and drizzle on the house sauce!

A place that serves barley tea gets bonus points haha, and their barley tea is really good.

Why one full set per person works so well
What I loved about Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch: it's tidy and clean, and it's one dish per person. There are times when splitting food gets awkward — here, eating solo actually feels more relaxing?

Soup comes as part of the set too! Gopchang gim (seasoned laver), gungchae, and jeotgal (salted seafood) show up as excellent rice thieves.

After a short wait, it came out quick!!

First bite of the mackerel thistle rice
The signature dish, mackerel!! If I hadn't already had fish for lunch, I probably would've ordered this myself. So glossy and shiny.

Seeing me drooling, my friend gave me a bite haha. The mackerel was plump and nutty, and the chive soy sauce served alongside brought out its savoriness, while the distinctive aroma of the gondre rice tamed any fishy edge haha

How was the yukhoe bibimbap at Hyangtaek?
And now my order, the yukhoe bibimbap! The yukhoe was so nicely shaped haha

Just a single egg yolk dropped on top

I mixed it up thoroughly. Inside, the vegetables, pear, yukhoe, house sauce, and yolk all blended together beautifully! It's not overpowering at all — whether wrapped in gim, eaten with gungchae, or paired with jeotgal, nothing feels out of place, and it's all delicious!
Final thoughts on dinner at Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch
If you're looking for a clean, can't-go-wrong Korean restaurant for a date or a casual get-together, I'd recommend Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch!! From the interior to the tableware, everything has this tidy, proper feel that makes it comfortable and pleasant no matter who you're with! The signature dishes like the mackerel thistle rice are as clean and flavorful as they look. Personally, I found the whole spread not overly seasoned but true to the ingredients' own flavors — kind of like eating an elevated version of home cooking..? Thanks to the thoughtful meal and the neat atmosphere, it was easy to stay focused on the conversation the whole time!! Recommended if you want clean, tasty, no-fuss Korean food in a pleasant setting.
