Jeonpo-dong Korean restaurant born at Daegu's Gyodong Market

In short

Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch is a Korean rice-bowl restaurant on Seojeon-ro in Jeonpo-dong, Busanjin, Busan, and the Busan outpost of Hyangtaek, which opened at Daegu's Gyodong Market in 2022. After eating at the Daegu flagship and the Gyeongju branch, the writer ordered the signature samchi gondre bap (mackerel with thistle rice, 14,000 won), yukhoe bibimbap (14,000 won) and a side of hanpan galbi (10,000 won). With about seven four-person tables in a cozy hanok-style room, Hyangtaek Jeonpo is a good pick for a clean, well-balanced Korean meal near Seomyeon.

I've now been to the Hyangtaek Daegu flagship, then the Gyeongju branch, and finally Hyangtaek Jeonpo haha. As a Korean food lover, I was so happy to find a good rice place popping up in Jeonpo-dong. Sharing my review for anyone looking for a good spot to eat in Jeonpo-dong.

Inside the hanok-style room: how many seats does Hyangtaek Jeonpo have?

Inside, Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch has about seven four-person tables. It's a warm, cozy space with hanok elements reimagined in a modern way everywhere you look — totally my taste. The soft lighting sets a great mood too!

A section of the restaurant introducing the Hyangtaek brand

Hyangtaek started in 2022 in a corner of Gyodong Market in Daegu! I visited the flagship when I traveled to Daegu, and it was even more appealing as a clean, tidy Korean restaurant tucked inside a warm, traditional market.

Just a note that Hyangtaek also offers takeout and delivery.

I appreciated that they clearly labeled the origin of every ingredient — it added to my trust in the place.

What side dishes come with the meal at Hyangtaek

The yukhoe bibimbap comes with an egg yolk, doenjang-flavored gochujang, bibim jeotgal, and pickled gungchae (a leafy vegetable). My mackerel thistle rice came with special sauce, bibim jeotgal, and pickled gungchae. They also served gopchang gim!

Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch was even more likeable for being such a neatly arranged Jeonpo-dong spot.

How do the yukhoe bibimbap and hanpan galbi taste?

Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch's yukhoe bibimbap is ₩14,000, and the side of hanpan galbi is ₩10,000. Fluffy rice piled with lettuce, tender yukhoe (raw beef), and an egg yolk on top — mix it all up and it's a savory, deeply flavorful yukhoe bibimbap!

And here's the hanpan galbi! Sweet and salty, kind of like tteokgalbi (patty-style short rib), and great to eat with rice haha.

Samchi gondre bap, the signature mackerel and thistle rice

Hyangtaek's signature mackerel thistle rice is ₩14,000. Piled high with gondre (mountain thistle greens), pickled shiitake, chives, and sesame salt, plus a whole piece of nicely grilled mackerel — the visual is seriously appetizing.

The mackerel came fully deboned, making Hyangtaek's mackerel thistle rice even easier to eat. Mash the flaky mackerel flesh, mix it with the gondre, sesame salt, pickled shiitake, chives, and special sauce, and it's delicious!

It's tasty on its own, but even better with a piece of hanpan galbi on top haha. Next time I'd like to try the hanpan mushroom too!
