These days I find myself craving a Korean meal that's easy on the stomach but still full of flavor, rather than anything too spicy or heavy. And when it's with my parents, it's even better to find a place that's perfect for a family outing!! That place is Hyangtaek, a Korean restaurant in Buldang-dong, Cheonan.

Hyangtaek serves Korean food that makes the most of good ingredients — it seemed great for a workday lunch or a family meal, so I brought my mom and dad along to check it out 😊

Finding Hyangtaek Cheonan Buldang Branch: storefront and parking

Hyangtaek, the Korean restaurant in Buldang-dong, Cheonan, sits on the first floor of its building, so it was easy to find. Honestly, Buldang-dong can get pretty congested, so I usually avoid it around lunch or dinner — but this spot is a bit further down, in a quieter part of the neighborhood, which made it easy to visit.

The exterior already felt like a Korean restaurant, with a wood-toned sign and roof tile details reminiscent of a traditional hanok — not overly traditional, but with a distinct Hyangtaek atmosphere of its own. Building parking is available too, which made it convenient to drive there.

What the dining room and seating are like

Inside, Hyangtaek Cheonan Buldang Branch is decorated in wood tones throughout. Wooden tables and chairs plus soft lighting gave it a clean yet warm feel. The seating is mostly tables for 2–4 people, so it felt comfortable whether you're eating alone or with friends, family, or coworkers. We visited at lunchtime and it was packed with customers^^

Near the entrance was a sign that said SINCE 2022 along with the story of Hyangtaek. It started in a corner of Daegu's Gyodong Market and, over time and with care, grew into what it is today. It felt less like a simply well-decorated Korean restaurant and more like a place trying to carry good ingredients and Korean flavors forward for the long haul.

Hyangtaek's menu and what three dishes plus a side cost

Hyangtaek, the Korean restaurant in Buldang-dong, Cheonan, offers a range of Korean dishes, including rice bowls and gondre rice (rice with dried gondre greens).

We ordered mackerel gondre rice for ₩14,000, eggplant doenjang rice bowl for ₩13,000, perilla-herb squid rice bowl for ₩13,000, and a side of grilled deodeok (bellflower root) and mushrooms for ₩9,000.

After ordering, the basic banchan (side dishes) and soup came out first. Neatly arranged side dishes plus a warm soup made it feel like a proper full Korean meal.

How to eat at Hyangtaek for the best flavor

Hyangtaek, the Korean restaurant in Buldang-dong, Cheonan, actually gives instructions on how to eat the dishes for the best flavor rather than just eating them as they come. You mix the toppings evenly over the rice, then add the sauces and seasonings on the side to taste. You can wrap the rice and toppings in gim (dried seaweed) for a bite, or add the seasoning sauce for a different flavor — it was fun being able to enjoy one dish in several different ways.

💚 What I ordered was the mackerel gondre rice.

Wow~~ just look how neat it looks! A generous heap of gondre topped with nicely grilled mackerel, along with sesame seeds and various other ingredients.

I gently flaked off some mackerel and ate it with the gondre — the fish, the greens, and the seasoning sauce really went well together. There was a subtle aroma from the gondre, the mackerel's clean flavor layered on top, and the sauce added just the right hit of savoriness. Best of all, it wasn't overpowering. Mild but not bland, and not too heavy — a flavor pretty much anyone would like.

Wrapping the rice and toppings in gim gave it a whole different flavor too 😋 And it paired perfectly with the jeotgal (salted seafood) side dish that came with it. So good^^

Eggplant doenjang rice bowl, 13,000 won: kelp vinegar is the trick

💚 My mom ordered the eggplant doenjang rice bowl.

The eggplant is piled on in big chunks — looks delicious just to look at, right? It really was soft and tender when I tried it. And the key with this dish is not to just eat it as is, but to add the kelp vinegar Hyangtaek serves alongside it!

My mom tried the vinegar and said it was fine to add the whole thing, so I tried a bite too. You'd think adding a lot of vinegar would make it turn sharply sour, right? But not at all — the tanginess blended naturally into the dish and tasted just right. The soft texture of the eggplant, the savory doenjang (soybean paste), and the freshness of the kelp vinegar together made for a much cleaner flavor than I expected. So good!!!

Chamnamul-herb squid rice bowl, 13,000 won

💚 My dad ordered the perilla-herb squid rice bowl.

Just look at how loaded it is with chamnamul (wild perilla herb greens) and squid! No sense of skimping on ingredients — very generous portions. It's on the spicy side, but the fragrant chamnamul cleanly balances the heat. So even though it's spicy, it never felt heavy or one-note — the finish stayed clean. Here too, nothing felt disconnected; the chamnamul, squid, and seasoning worked together nicely.

Best dish of the day: grilled deodeok root and mushrooms, 9,000 won

💚 And if I had to pick the single dish I enjoyed the most out of everything we ate that day... it's the grilled deodeok and mushrooms.

Smoky grilled deodeok and mushroom side dish at Hyangtaek

I ordered it as a light side dish, but it was so much better than I expected — I was genuinely surprised. The first bite hits you with smoky char flavor, and the deodeok and mushrooms are well seasoned, with just the right amount of spice and umami that kept me reaching for more. Smoky char + spicy seasoning + the chewy bite of the deodeok made for a flavor beyond what I imagined. If you go to Hyangtaek, definitely order the grilled deodeok and mushrooms as a side!

Verdict: a Buldang-dong lunch spot that works for parents

Hyangtaek, the Korean restaurant in Buldang-dong, Cheonan, was a place that nailed both healthy Korean food and real flavor. The mackerel gondre rice was clean, nutty, and comforting; the eggplant doenjang rice bowl was soft eggplant and doenjang brightened up by kelp vinegar; the perilla-herb squid rice bowl was spicy but cleanly balanced by the chamnamul. And the grilled deodeok and mushrooms, with its smoky char and spicy seasoning, was the standout dish! 🔥

Above all, what I liked most was that across all four dishes, nothing felt off — everything was clean and consistently delicious. If you prefer Korean food that lets the ingredients' own flavor shine rather than anything too spicy or heavy, you'll probably love this place^^ Whether it's a visit with your parents like us, a hearty workday lunch, or a family outing with kids, if you're looking for a good place to eat in Buldang-dong, Cheonan, Hyangtaek is worth a stop 😊
