We tried cauldron rice made with Sindongjin rice, paired with eggplant doenjang rice bowl, mackerel gondre rice, and grilled mushroom platter, along with the special sauce, seasoned laver, and mixed jeotgal. Recommended for anyone looking for a healthy, mild meal.
Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch is a Korean set-meal restaurant on the 2nd floor in Dongseong-ro, Jung-gu, Daegu. Three of us ordered the grilled pork bulgogi set, the grandma's octopus stir-fry Korean course set, and the bulgogi yeolmu bibim set, each arriving as a full spread of rice and side dishes, with fried eggs, extra rice, and seaweed available at the self-service bar. A great pick when you want a hearty, non-spicy meal for under ₩10,000s.
Matdongsam Beomeo Main Branch is a new pork belly restaurant in Beomeo-dong, Suseong, Daegu. The writer's family ordered 4 servings of pork belly, gabrisal, mulbibim noodles, yeolmu bibim noodles and grandma's doenjang stew, then added an extra serving of pork belly because the meat was that fresh, and a waiting line formed right after they sat down. Kkodeulsal was already sold out, so an early visit is best if you want to try every cut.

Cafe Dongyi Chimsan Branch is a Korean restaurant on the first floor of dormitory Building E at Samsung Changjo Campus in Buk-gu, Daegu. Arriving just before 6:30 pm, we took the last free seat and ordered the signature Dongyi Han-sang Set at 36,900 won, swapping the doenjang stew for kimchi jjigae for an extra 1,000 won, and the nuruk-fermented gluten-free tangsuyuk (sweet-and-sour pork) and jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) stood out most. Of all the places to eat at Samsung Changjo Campus, Cafe Dongyi Chimsan Branch is our number one, and we would go back without hesitation.
Otter Rabbit House is a brunch café in Dalseo, Daegu, close to Dowon-dong and Sangin-dong. Jambon butter pasta and egg basil French toast were ordered together and shared alongside a plum ade, and the three went in different directions — nutty, fragrant and tangy — so tasting them one by one was half the fun. Otter Rabbit House is not a place to eat and leave; the atmosphere is worth taking slowly too.
Samsol Gamjatang Main Branch is a gamjatang (pork bone soup) restaurant on Sanghwa-ro near the Veterans Hospital in Dalseo-gu, Daegu, which opened officially on September 5. During the soft opening on Friday, September 4, the recommended ppyeo haejangguk (pork bone hangover soup, 10,000 won) arrived in an extra-large earthenware bowl holding two big bones still covered in meat. The broth at Samsol Gamjatang is clean and free of any gamey smell but genuinely fiery, so anyone who avoids spicy food should come prepared.
Rama & Bavana Suseong Lake Branch is an Indian and Asian restaurant on Yonghak-ro in Suseong-gu, Daegu. On a weekday visit after 5 p.m., the order was nasi goreng and mi goreng at 16,000 won each and tandoori cream chicken at 14,000 won, and the mi goreng spice level was toned down on request. The spices at Rama & Bavana are not overpowering, so it is worth trying even if Indian and Asian food is new to you.
Gankeun Galbi Seongseo Branch is a two-story all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ restaurant at 71 Igok-dong-ro in Dalseo-gu, Daegu. A big-eating couple grazed through unlimited royal beef short rib, makchang (pork intestine), pork belly and pork ribs while their 29-month-old played in the restaurant's indoor playroom. With clean-tasting beef short rib, sweet-and-salty pork ribs and a self-bar holding ramyeon, tteokbokki, seasoned fried chicken and bingsu, Gankeun Galbi made for a satisfying weekend family dinner.
Hyangtaek Seongseo Keimyung University Branch is a newly opened Korean restaurant in Dalseo, Daegu, across from the main gate of Keimyung University's Seongseo Campus and near Mirinae Park. After a maternity photo shoot, the writer and her husband came for dinner and ordered mackerel gondre rice (samchi gondrebap) at 14,000 won and herring roe bibim noodles (cheongeoal bibimmyeon) at 13,000 won, and neither the mackerel nor the herring roe tasted the least bit fishy. Hyangtaek is a good choice on a day when you want a filling, mild Korean meal.
Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch is a home-style Korean restaurant in Daemyeong-dong, Nam-gu, Daegu, near Exit 4 of Daemyeong Station. Eating alone here meant ordering the shoulder-cut Japanese curry rice for 9,900 won and the mini tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) tasting portion for 9,900 won, plus free refills of five-grain rice, fried egg, seasoned seaweed flakes and barley candy from the self-serve bar. With solo window seats, group tables and baby chairs, Cafe Dongi handles a quiet solo lunch and a big group equally well.
