Dog-friendly tofu restaurant near Seorak Waterpia in Sokcho: Jinsol

Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu is a soft tofu (sundubu) restaurant in the Haksapyeong area below the Seorak Waterpia entrance in Sokcho, Gangwon. The meal was Chodang sundubu, a bulgogi set meal and modubu (plain tofu block), with free side dish refills, and a separate dog-friendly room with its own door held other diners and their dogs. Parking fits tour buses and the doors open at 7:30am, making Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu an easy meal before Seoraksan.

Jumunjin sashimi restaurant flounder takeout: Minja Hoetjip

Minja Hoetjip is a sashimi and seafood restaurant tucked inside Jumunjin Fish Market in Gangneung, Gangwon. The flounder sashimi was packed to eat back at the accommodation, and Minja Hoetjip sent it out in a cooler bag with ice packs, lettuce wraps, chojang, soy sauce and ssamjang, plus a free seafood extra, so nothing else had to be prepared. The flounder was chewy and clean with no fishy smell or mushy texture, making Minja Hoetjip takeout a solid pick for sashimi at your Gangneung accommodation.

Gyeongpodae mulhoe restaurant with Gangneung beer pairing: Samsami-ne

Samsami-ne Gyeongpodae Main Branch is a mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) and red sea bream yubiki restaurant at the end of the sashimi restaurant street on Gyeongpodae Beach in Gangneung. The 80,000 won set for two at Samsami-ne brings mulhoe and red sea bream yubiki together with sushi rice, washed aged kimchi, steamed egg and shrimp, eaten here with a Gangneung beer. The broth was good enough that even someone who had never liked mulhoe drank the bowl dry, and it was worth a second trip to Gangneung in one summer.

Sokcho bakery souvenirs: potato bread and squid jjondeugi gift sets

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store is a bakery and café on Haksapyeong-gil between Sokcho and Goseong in Gangwon, just past the Misiryeong Tunnel. On a two-day Sokcho and Goseong trip, the writer picked up one box of bultan gamja bread, the shop's burnt-style potato bread (4 pieces, 9,000 won), and one set of Sokcho squid-flavored jjondeugi, a chewy dried snack (12 pieces, 10,000 won), as gifts for their parents, who both loved the chewy rice-cake shell packed with potato. For a Sokcho souvenir that isn't the usual, Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store is the answer.

360 cross-aged pork belly at Hanmaeum, a Wonju BBQ restaurant

Hanmaeum Jeongyuk Sikdang Wonju Enterprise City Branch is a butcher-shop Korean BBQ restaurant in the Enterprise City area of Wonju, Gangwon, with a large parking lot, private rooms and a separate kids' room. After a stop at Saemmaru Library on a weekday evening, the order was three servings of 360 cross-aged samgyeopsal (pork belly) at 180g each plus two bowls of rice at 1,500 won, with a look around the kids' room. The pork tastes the same on every visit, and the jjolmyeon (chewy noodle) scallion salad, Suhyangmi rice and yogurt ice cream at the end make Hanmaeum an easy choice for a family dinner.

Musil-dong Wonju Japanese restaurant with gyukatsu set 2: Ichigyu

Ichigyu Wonju is a gyukatsu (Japanese-style beef cutlet) restaurant on the first floor of the Lotte Cinema building in Musil-dong, Wonju. Stopping overnight in Wonju on the way to Pyeongchang, two of us ordered set menu 2 (striploin gyukatsu, hamburg omurice and two drinks) plus karaage and fried shrimp, and waited only 10 minutes on a Saturday because tables turn over quickly. With two hours of free parking and baby chairs, Ichigyu Wonju works just as well for a date as for a family meal.

QooQoo Chuncheon Branch is a sushi buffet with around 120 dishes on B1 of the CGV building in Toegye-dong, Chuncheon. Hoega is a sashimi and seafood restaurant in a residential area near Beonyeong-ro in Sokcho, offering takeout pickup for travelers. Saturday wait #35 during buckwheat flower festival: Bongpyeong Memil

Bongpyeong Memil Migayeon is a buckwheat noodle restaurant in Bongpyeong, Pyeongchang, Gangwon, that makes its 100% buckwheat noodles in-house. Visiting on a Saturday at noon during the buckwheat flower festival, the writer took waiting number 35 and got seated in about 15 minutes, then tried the plain memil makguksu (buckwheat cold noodles), hanwoo yukhoe bibim makguksu (raw beef tartare mixed noodles), buckwheat pancakes, and an extra serving of noodles. It's a great fit for anyone who wants to taste buckwheat itself rather than a heavily seasoned bowl.
