Mayway is a newly opened Chinese restaurant in Gwangsan, Gwangju. I tried its hot stone platter jjajang, a one-person set with jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk, plus sweet potato fritters. Verdict: Mayway is a great pick for a hearty meal with several dishes to try.

I shared a steaming bowl with my dad, who cannot eat just anything, and loved seeing him enjoy every last bit. Verdict: a comforting lunch spot for a warm, deeply satisfying bowl.

Filling Donkatsu is a pork cutlet restaurant near Ssangam Park in Buk-gu, Gwangju. I tried the 200-hour tenderloin katsu for 18,000 won and spicy dongjuk clam tomato pasta for 19,500 won, plus the unlimited self bar. Verdict: the tenderloin katsu and fresh salad were especially satisfying.

On my third visit after work with my boyfriend, we let the 11,000-won-per-person hot pot simmer well, topped up the broth, and finished with 2,000-won fried rice. Verdict: a satisfying after-work dinner for rich beef-bone broth and spicy kimchi flavor.
