Gyeongju mochi shop with a Naver photo-review cooler bag: Tareudang

Tareudang is a fruit mochi and egg tart dessert shop on the main street of Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. The golden kiwi mochi was unwrapped right on the street and split into six bites by the couple, and the mango yogurt mochi was cut open with scissors back at the guesthouse to check the cross-section. The chocolate mochi was left behind in the guesthouse fridge and thrown out, so check the fridge before checkout.

Gyeongju dessert shop where peach yogurt giant mochi won: Tareudang

Tareudang is a fruit mochi and egg tart dessert shop on the west side of Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk, open daily 11:00–19:00. On a Monday afternoon there was no wait, and peach yogurt, kiwi, pineapple and fig giant mochi were packed to go and eaten back in Seoul, with 500 won off each piece for orders of 4 or more. All four were good, but the peach yogurt giant mochi was the clear winner — go early, as Tareudang closes once the fruit runs out.

Samgyetang restaurant near Gyeongju City Hall, Dongcheon-dong

Ogajeong Gamasot Samgyetang is a samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) restaurant in Dongcheon-dong, near Gyeongju City Hall in Gyeongbuk. Stopping in on a motorcycle trip from Gampo, the writer and her husband each ordered yeongyang samgyetang and found the soup already packed with rice, so neither needed a side bowl, and the seasoning was neither too salty nor too bland. With chicken free of any gamey smell and tangy cucumber kimchi on the side, both bowls were cleaned to the last drop.

Gyeongju café with tree-view seats and cream lattes: Yard

Yard is a café in the Bomun Tourist Complex in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk, with yellow cosmos fields and leafy tree views. After visiting Seokguram Grotto and Bulguksa, I relaxed here on a weekday with a signature cream latte, matcha latte, and chocolate whipped-cream cake. Verdict: a peaceful stop for a scenic break during a Gyeongju trip.
