Choi Main Branch is a large bakery café on Yangsan-daero in Dongmyeon, Yangsan, Gyeongnam. Sitting by the floor-to-ceiling windows with a friend, the writer had the wagujak peach pastry and a Mont Blanc chestnut cream bow pastry with peppermint tea (5,500 won) and a decaf coffee, then took home fig bottle cake, chestnut bread and tofu crackers. With a wide parking lot and an order-downstairs, pick-up-upstairs setup, Choi Main Branch is an easy Yangsan café for staying put and talking for hours.

Mulgeum brunch café in Yangsan: mushroom soup, Famous Venny

Famous Venny Yangsan Oslo Park Branch is a brunch café in the Oslo Park commercial building in Mulgeum, Yangsan, Gyeongnam. Dongsang-dong, Gimhae Chinese restaurant dinner with a baby: Dongbaek

Dongbaek is a Chinese restaurant with private room seating on Gaya-ro in Dongsang-dong, Gimhae, Gyeongnam. Two adults and one baby arrived on a weekday around 5:30 pm and ordered small fresh sirloin tangsuyuk (sweet and sour meat) for 22,000 won, fried rice for 9,000 won and fresh-meat ganjajang rice for 11,000 won, and the meat-packed ganjajang at Dongbaek was the best the writer has ever eaten. Portions are so generous that one rice dish is plenty, and a return visit to Dongbaek is certain.

Daetgeori Korean restaurant with free dessert bar: Masan Ssamjangjip

Masan Ssamjangjip is a Korean set-meal restaurant in the Daetgeori area of Masanhappo-gu, Changwon, serving a ssambap (lettuce-wrapped rice) set with about 30 side dishes. Two orders of the 14,900 won ssambap set brought dressed greens, seaweed soup, braised kimchi and stir-fried pork, plus free Hangang ramyeon and a self-serve dessert bar of rice cake, jjondeugi and fruit — injeolmi rice cake three times over. For a Korean spread heavy on side dishes with dessert thrown in free, Masan Ssamjangjip is the answer.

Mulgeum European restaurant in Yangsan for basil pesto pasta: Bueokgan

Bueokgan Restaurant Yangsan Oslo Park Branch is a European dining spot on the basement level of Oslo Park in Mulgeum, Yangsan. Over lunch with her mom, the writer ordered basil pesto cream pasta (18,000 won), shrimp rosé pasta (20,000 won) and pastry soup (10,000 won), and found both pastas generous and satisfying, while the pumpkin-based pastry soup tasted less creamy than expected. With its own underground parking and widely spaced tables, Bueokgan Oslo Park is an easy choice for treating parents or a family meal out.

Juchon, Gimhae pork bone soup restaurant: bone-in vs boneless

Ppyeodae Itneun Haejangguk Juchon Branch is a pork bone soup (haejangguk) and gamjatang restaurant in Juchon, Gimhae, about 7-8 minutes by car from Costco Gimhae. A couple stopped by on a rainy day for the bone-in haejangguk (11,000 won), the boneless haejangguk (11,000 won) and the spicy seasoned crab (12,000 won): the meat slid off the bone at the touch of chopsticks and the broth was sharp and clean with no gamey smell. The spicy seasoned crab makes even confident chili eaters sweat, so order it with your spice tolerance in mind.

Korean restaurant set meal with a 4-year-old, 15-min wait: Yun Sikdang

Yun Sikdang is a set-meal Korean restaurant on Bukmasan Furniture Street in Masanhappo-gu, Changwon, with a single menu: grilled bulgogi set meal. Masan Korean restaurant you queue for at opening: Masan Ssamjangjip

Masan Ssamjangjip is a hanjeongsik (Korean set-menu) restaurant serving ssambap, or lettuce-wrap rice sets, on Daetgeori along Haean-daero in Masanhappo-gu, Changwon. Arriving right at opening without a reservation, the writer ordered the ₩14,900 per-person ssambap set and added the garlic-bomb braised beef short ribs, discounted for set-menu customers, then worked through about 30 side dishes, blue crab doenjang stew and free-refill Hangang ramyeon. Masan Ssamjangjip is best visited with a reservation or by turning up at opening time.

Kid's birthday trip first meal: naengmyeon at Song Giwon Jinju
