White pork ribs and mel jorim at Oreumak Garden in Jungmun, Seogwipo

Oreumak Garden Jungmun Main Branch is a dry-aged pork restaurant on Daepo-jungang-ro in Jungmun, Seogwipo. A couple tried white pork fresh ribs, black pork ogyeopsal, frozen samgyeopsal, and black pork kimchi jjigae, served with basic side dishes, free steamed egg, and mel jorim (braised anchovy sauce). The crowd was mostly local Jeju uncles, and between the two, the white pork fresh ribs got their vote.

Looking for gifts to share with coworkers and friends, the writer bought an 8-piece dol hareubang (stone grandfather) madeleine set and tried the matcha flavor first back at the accommodation. Not overly sweet and neatly packaged, it made an easy gift to split among several people.

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is a mackerel ssam-bap (wrapped rice) restaurant on Iljuseo-ro in Jungmun, Seogwipo, Jeju. Opening at 9:30am, the writer went for a late brunch with the old kimchi mackerel stew + abalone hot stone rice set for two (₩36,000) and abalone sea urchin seaweed soup, paired with Udo peanut makgeolli and Jeju ale beer. Between the self-serve side dish bar, free abalone porridge before noon, and a stroll through the garden after, this is a strongly recommended Jungmun breakfast course.

Yakiniku-style garlic galbisal and miyeokguk refill: Dolgyeok Hanwoo

Dolgyeok Hanwoo is a hanwoo (Korean beef) restaurant in Yeondong, Jeju City. Visiting on a weekday early evening, thin slices of marong galbisal (garlic marinated rib meat) were grilled yakiniku-style one piece at a time, alongside doenjang sulbap and an all-you-can-refill 1++ brisket hanwoo miyeokguk (seaweed soup). The beef was so good that a light dip in salt and wasabi sauce was all it needed — easily the best beef eaten in years.

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is an ocean-view pork noodle restaurant across from Handam Beach in Aewol, Jeju. On a rainy afternoon at 3pm, right before break time, the writer had bone-broth pork noodles, dongchimi bibim noodles, and dombe naengsuyuk, and found the self-serve bar stocked with kimchi, pickled radish, and even hair ties. A satisfying Aewol lunch for a cloudy day when you're craving hot broth.

New parking tower at Jeju Dongmun Market for garlic oranda snacks

Cheongchuni Oranda Dongmun Market Main Branch Tapdong is a traditional snack shop in Jeju's Dongmun Market that hand-makes oranda (Korean rice puff candy) every day. On the last day of a Jeju trip, before heading to the airport, the writer stopped by with family, used the newly built public parking tower connected to the market by an indoor passage, and picked up a four-flavor oranda gift set plus a bulk pack of garlic oranda, whose spicy garlic chips and sweet jocheong (rice syrup) got the best reaction from friends. Worth a stop for a Jeju souvenir that's easy to share.

Family dining with high chairs at a Jeju BBQ restaurant: Jeju Udae

Jeju Udae is a straw-smoked udae galbi (thick-cut short rib) restaurant in Nohyeong-dong, Jeju, a short drive from Jeju Airport. A family meal of two servings of straw-smoked udae galbi with kkakdugi fried rice, two bowls of rice and a drink came to 75,000 won, and staff grilled the meat at the table, cutting the child's pieces smaller. With a high chair ready and a tomato marinade closing the meal like a course, Jeju Udae was an easy place to eat with a young child.

Jeju City café with window seats for fig cream cake: Gluttony Coffee

Gluttony Coffee is a modern local dessert café on Gudam-ro 2-gil in Jeju City, close to Jeju Airport. The order at Gluttony Coffee covered the signature Gluttony latte, watermelon ade (tangmobbang), a seasonal fig cream cake, a white macadamia cookie and a cream cheese red velvet, and the cream was not overly sweet, so the fig's gentle sweetness came through. Between the free public parking right outside and the floor-to-ceiling window seats, Gluttony Coffee is an easy place to slow down on a Jeju trip.

Jeju noodle restaurant with self-serve banchan bar: Myeonjumak Jeju

Myeonjumak Jeju Main Branch is a Jeju black pork noodle soup (gogi guksu) restaurant on Beonyeong-ro in Jocheon-eup, Jeju, right near Eco Land. After touring Eco Land, the writer stopped in with family for Jeju black pork noodle soup, spicy mixed noodles and a half order of dombe pork (sliced boiled pork); the noodles and meat both arrived in double-size portions, and the self-serve bar for banchan and rice made the meal easy. For a filling lunch while driving Jeju's east side, Myeonjumak Jeju Main Branch is a solid stop.
