If I had to pick the one place that stuck with me most from this Jeju trip, I'd say it without hesitation: Suragan Tteokbang (수라간떡방), a Jeju omegi-tteok (millet rice cake) shop. It wasn't even on my original itinerary — I stumbled onto it while looking for gifts for my parents and friends. But after visiting, it turned out to be a great pick both as a gift and just for my own taste.

Why I went looking for Suragan Tteokbang

Honestly, I don't eat rice cakes often — if anything, the tteokbokki kind is about all the rice cake I've ever had. But whenever I travel to Jeju, there's always one thing I agonize over: gifts for my parents and friends. I wanted something more Jeju than the usual chocolate or tangerines — something a bit special. That's how I found Jeju's well-known omegi-tteok shop, Suragan Tteokbang.

How many flavors of omegi-tteok? A surprisingly wide lineup

One thing that impressed me at Suragan Tteokbang was just how many varieties of omegi-tteok they had. Just counting the ones I tried: tangerine, soybean powder, nuts, red bean, and black sesame.

Each flavor was distinctly different, so it was fun trying a bit of everything. Personally, the nut and black sesame ones suited me best — the nuttiness really came through.

The tangerine omegi-tteok had that refreshing citrus scent, very fitting for Jeju. Having so many options to choose from was a huge plus when shopping for gifts — when you can't guess everyone's taste, packing a little of each flavor cuts way down on the chance of a miss.

Suragan Tteokbang: takeout and shipping prices

I ordered the 20-piece set for 22,000 won. It was packed as a gift with an ice pack tucked in, all very neat. You could even choose the packing box, which was great for gifting. 🎁

Ordering by courier adds a shipping fee, so it costs a bit more than just packing it up in-store. But after tasting it, I get why people would order it shipped too — it's that good! 😋 It felt like the kind of rice cake you'd crave again once home after eating it in Jeju, good for both gifting and reordering.

When to pack it and how to store it

If you're taking some home, I'd recommend packing it up on your last day in Jeju, right before heading back. If you can't eat it right away, freezing is best — and rather than stacking the pieces, laying them out individually keeps them in better condition and tastes better once thawed. After tasting it, I get why people would order it shipped too — it's that good! 😋 It felt like the kind of rice cake you'd crave again once home after enjoying it in Jeju, so I'd recommend it both as a gift and for reordering.

First bite: my impressions

The moment I took a bite, I knew this was good. What stood out most was the chewy texture — not heavy or dense like rice cakes can sometimes be, but light and clean going down.

Maybe because there are no added ingredients and the natural flavor of the raw materials shines through, it never felt overly sweet or artificial — just clean. Even someone who doesn't normally eat rice cakes, like me, found myself reaching for another piece without thinking about it.

Individually packed omegi-tteok for summer gifting

Why it worked well as a summer rice cake gift

Honestly, gifting rice cakes in summer worried me a bit — I was afraid they'd spoil or harden quickly in the heat during transport. But Suragan Tteokbang's individual packaging eased that concern.

I actually handed these out to my parents and friends, and they all said they enjoyed them. The packaging itself felt quite nice too, like real care had gone into it. For a Jeju travel souvenir, I felt like I'd really nailed it.

Store atmosphere, the owner, and parking

Walking in, the shop had a great feel. It was clearly kept hygienic, and I got a strong sense that this wasn't factory-made rice cake but something actually handmade with care on-site.

The owner was young, friendly, and had a cheerful personality — chatting with them made the whole visit enjoyable. These small encounters and conversations during a trip tend to stick with you longer than you'd expect. There was also parking available, so visiting by car wasn't a hassle either.

Suragan Tteokbang doesn't just sell omegi-tteok. They also had injeolmi, songpyeon, jeolpyeon, yakgwa (honey cookie), and various other traditional rice cakes and snacks on display.

Omegi-tteok was my main purchase, but just browsing the other rice cakes was fun on its own. If I visit again, I'd love to try some of the varieties I missed this time.
