Matcha-first tasting of an 8-flavor gift set at Today Jeju, Jeju

In short

Today Jeju is a Jeju local-food dessert shop on the 1st floor of Shilla Duty Free Jeju Branch in Jeju City. Looking for gifts to share with coworkers and friends, the writer bought an 8-piece dol hareubang (stone grandfather) madeleine set and tried the matcha flavor first back at the accommodation. Not overly sweet and neatly packaged, it made an easy gift to split among several people.

Coming back from a Jeju trip, gifts are always the tricky part.

It feels wrong to leave Jeju empty-handed, but buying an overly obvious souvenir is also awkward. Gifts for coworkers or friends especially need to taste good and look decent when wrapped — and honestly, not that many options satisfy both.

This time I visited Today Jeju Shilla Duty Free Shop Jeju Branch, a place selling Jeju souvenirs. They carry a range of desserts made with Jeju local food and good ingredients.

This time I tried the dol hareubang madeleine set from Today Jeju. Shaped like the dol hareubang (stone grandfather statues) that come to mind first when you think of Jeju, it felt very Jeju right from the first look.

The packaging was clean too, so it didn't feel awkward to give as a gift. It felt more put-together than a souvenir grabbed in a rush at a tourist spot, so it was fine to hand over as-is. Personally I prefer edible Jeju gifts, so this suited me even more.

The inside of the store was decorated in Jeju's signature orange color, and the dol hareubang-shaped madeleines were so cute I ended up taking a few photos.

Dol hareubang madeleine flavors

There were quite a lot of flavors. The matcha one especially reminded me of Jeju's green, lush nature.

On top of these there's a chocolate flavor, and the color varies a bit depending on whether it's chocolate-coated or not. If you want to try several flavors at once, there's also an 8-piece packaged set.

No Herm*s here, but there is a Today Jeju shopping bag, haha.

Trying the 8-flavor set at the accommodation, matcha first

As soon as I got to the accommodation I tried one, and the soft, moist texture typical of madeleines was good. I usually get sick of overly sweet desserts after a few bites, but this wasn't sickly sweet, so it was nice to eat one at a time as a snack with coffee or tea.

Looking at the blue sky and the green palm trees from the accommodation, I picked the matcha flavor first since it brought Jeju's nature to mind. Looking back at travel photos is nice, but eating food you brought back from the trip and recalling that mood is fun in its own way too.

Looking at photos to remember a trip is good, but eating food bought there to recall that atmosphere again is also pretty good. Especially since it's shaped like a dol hareubang, I think kids would love it as a Jeju gift too. It's fine for adults to share, and works just as well as a family snack to keep around.

Was it a good gift to share?

Since it's shaped like a dol hareubang, it's good for photos to commemorate a Jeju trip, and it seemed like a solid gift for households with kids or for family. If you're looking for something to share with several people, the manageable size and easy-to-eat dessert format are a plus too.

If you're heading to Jeju and looking for a souvenir or gift, Today Jeju's dol hareubang madeleines are worth a look. If you want something with a Jeju-specific shape instead of a generic souvenir, it's a decent choice. I wrapped up this trip's small gift with the dol hareubang madeleines.

Bringing them home and sharing with family, I got to feel that Jeju-trip feeling one more time, which was satisfying in its own way.
