Andeok pork BBQ restaurant in Jeju: white pork geungogi and makguksu

Heukdonsibaekdonmyeon Shinhwa World Branch is a geungogi (thick-cut pork) restaurant in Seogwang-ri, Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo, Jeju, where black pork and white pork are pre-grilled over charcoal briquettes and finished on a hot maekbansaek stone. The order was 600g of white pork geungogi at 57,000 won, plus glass noodle cucumber salad, black pork stew and cold buckwheat makguksu, and the geungogi came with extra collar meat that made it feel good value. For meat and a proper rice-or-noodle meal in one stop near Shinhwa World, Heukdonsibaekdonmyeon was a solid choice.

Solo dining cave seat and Jocha Set 500g at Jeju Samchun, Hamdeok

Jeju Samchun is a Jeju black pork restaurant on Sinbuk-ro in Jocheon, near Hamdeok Beach. Dining solo, the writer ordered the Jocha Set 500g and was seated in a cave-like nook while staff grilled the pork neck and pork belly from start to finish and served side dishes as if for two. It's a setup that works equally well for solo diners and families with kids.

White pork ribs 1kg with family in Jungmun, Jeju: Oreumak Garden

Oreumak Garden Jungmun Main Branch is a 40-year-old black pork restaurant in Jungmun, Seogwipo, and the first in Jeju to start dry-aging its meat. Since the writer's daughter struggles with black pork's chewy texture, the family ordered 600g of white pork raw ribs and 350g of seasoned ribs, and even accounting for bone weight, the three of them finished 1kg together. The flavor of the meat itself was on another level, making the 13 consecutive years on the Blue Ribbon Survey easy to understand.

1++ garlic galbisal vs hanwoo galbisal side by side: Dolgyeok Hanwoo

Dolgyeok Hanwoo is a hanwoo (Korean beef) charcoal grill restaurant in Yeondong, Jeju City, a short drive from Jeju Airport. Ordering 1++ manong galbisal (garlic-infused rib meat) and 1++ hanwoo galbisal side by side let us compare the garlic aroma against the beef's own flavor, and the hanwoo brisket miyeokguk (seaweed soup) came with free refills. A good stop in Jeju when you're craving beef instead of black pork.

Family weekday lunch, sold-out mackerel: Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is a Korean restaurant in Seogwipo, Jeju, serving braised mackerel and ssam-bap (lettuce-wrap rice) set meals. Visiting on a weekday lunch with her husband and child, the writer ordered the old kimchi mackerel stew with abalone hotpot rice set for two, since the day's 30-serving limit of boneless flowering mackerel with old kimchi was already sold out. Between the 16-dish self-serve bar and the sprawling garden, it made for a satisfying family meal with a kid in tow.

Jeju rice cake shop for day-before pickup and freezer storage: Suragan

Suragan Tteokbang is an omegi-tteok (rice cake) shop in Jeju City, Jeju. After falling for omegi-tteok at a hotel breakfast, the writer reserved and packed several flavors, only to find the rice cakes had melted in the hotel fridge overnight and had to ask the lobby to freeze them instead. Even a self-declared bread person changed their mind over this chewy, not-too-sweet rice cake — just pick it up on the last day of your trip so you can freeze it right away.

Toryeom pork rice soup for lunch with a kid: Handam Guksu, Jeju Aewol

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is a pork noodle restaurant in Aewol, Jeju, with ocean views through floor-to-ceiling windows. Visiting for lunch with a seven-year-old meant waiting via Catch Table before sharing lean pork rice soup (toryeom-style), a double order of dongchimi bibim noodles, and tteokgalbi. The lean pork rice soup was the clear favorite for all three, the tteokgalbi ran a bit greasy, and the bibim noodles were solid but unremarkable.

Cheongchuni Oranda Dongmun Market Main Branch Tapdong is a handmade oranda (Korean glazed puffed rice snack) and gwajul (fried dough confection) shop inside Jeju's Dongmun Market. After tasting several flavors, the writer bought bulk yuzu oranda for ₩10,000 and bulk nut oranda for ₩12,000 (550g each), with the yuzu version's lingering citrus scent winning her over. It's a good Jeju souvenir as long as you remember to eat it within 2 weeks and never refrigerate it.

Jeju airport-area restaurant with spicy fish roe stew: Hwadeogeuro

Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Jeju Iho Tewoo Branch is a wood-fired grilled fish restaurant on the Iho Tewoo coastal road near Jeju Airport. On the last day of a Jeju trip, the writer ordered the mackerel set for two plus a fish roe stew (altang) side set made extra spicy, and ate it in front of the floor-to-ceiling ocean-view windows, with so much roe that more kept surfacing every time the stew was stirred. Because each fish is grilled to order, Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang is worth a phone order in advance if your flight time is tight.
