In short

Danjeong Gongdeok (단정 공덕본점) is a wood-fired grill bistro wine bar five minutes on foot from Exit 1 of Gongdeok Station in Mapo, Seoul. The writer ordered red potato blue cheese gnocchi at 26,000 won, tilefish beurre blanc at 39,000 won and mushroom cream pasta with a bottle of Vistamar Brisa Chardonnay 2024, and the tilefish with chive oil sauce and peas was the dish of the night. A Gongdeok favorite: Danjeong Gongdeok.

Danjeong Gongdeok, a bistro wine bar near Gongdeok Station

My husband and I wanted somewhere with a nice atmosphere to eat good food and drink wine together after a while, so we picked Danjeong, a bistro wine bar near Gongdeok Station. Honestly we first planned to just order two light dishes and share a bottle of wine, but everything was so good we ended up ordering three main dishes in the end haha.😂

Danjeong is just about a 5-minute walk from Exit 1 of Gongdeok Station.

Exterior of Danjeong inside the Gongdeok Park Xi commercial block

It's tucked inside the Gongdeok Park Xi commercial block, which is also a good spot for a walk along Gyeongui Line Forest Park before or after dinner. That said, the place itself isn't huge, so I'd recommend making a reservation before visiting.

Inside Danjeong Gongdeok: bar seats, hall tables and evening lighting

Danjeong Gongdeok is a cozy space with a long bar table and about 3–4 tables in the inner hall. Walk in and the long bar table is the first thing you see.

The long bar table seating at Danjeong

Besides the bar seats, there are only about 3–4 tables in the inner hall — a small setup, but that actually made it easy to talk quietly over wine.

Cozy interior with tables in the inner hall

We visited in the evening, and the small table lamps combined with the soft indirect lighting made the whole place feel warm and pretty romantic.

Rows of wine bottles and glasses lined up around the space really nail the bistro wine bar vibe too.

Menu at Danjeong Gongdeok

I loved how varied the menu was.

Red potato blue cheese gnocchi, 26,000 won

We started by ordering the red potato blue cheese gnocchi and the grilled tilefish beurre blanc, then picked out a bottle of white wine. First up, the red potato blue cheese gnocchi (₩26,000).

A plate of red potato blue cheese gnocchi

One bite in and that funky, pungent blue cheese flavor I'd almost forgotten came roaring back haha. The gnocchi was golden and crisp outside, paired with a rich blue cheese cream — we cleared the plate in about 5 minutes.

The star of the night: tilefish beurre blanc, 39,000 won

And the undisputed star of the night was the grilled tilefish beurre blanc (₩39,000, subject to change).

Wood-fired grilled tilefish beurre blanc

The tilefish skin was wonderfully crisp while the flesh stayed soft. The chef showed us how to break up the fish flesh and scoop it up together with the sauce and peas.

Wow... that combination is genius.

Danjeong serves wood-fired grill dishes cooked over oak logs and charcoal, and you could catch a faint smoky aroma from the tilefish too, which made it even more fragrant. The sauce had a slightly sweeter, tangier edge than the classic beurre blanc I was expecting. With the chive oil and the natural sweetness of the peas added in, the overall balance was really good.

Mushroom cream pasta, ordered as an extra

Completely won over by the tilefish, we ended up ordering the mushroom cream pasta too haha.

The additionally ordered mushroom cream pasta

They told us it uses several kinds of mushrooms — porcini along with dried enoki and button mushrooms — and I loved how the subtle, fragrant mushroom aroma lingered the whole time we ate.

The crispy dried enoki on top added a nice texture too, and the cream sauce wasn't overly heavy.

Wine pairing: Vistamar Brisa Chardonnay 2024

The wine was a Vistamar Brisa Chardonnay 2024.

A bottle of Vistamar Brisa Chardonnay 2024

Dry and clean, it went really well with everything we ordered that night. It handled the rich blue cheese and the creamy pasta with ease, and paired especially well with the tilefish since it's a fish dish. It had been a while since my husband and I slowly worked through a bottle of wine together, and honestly that alone put me in a great mood. 🍾
