Jeju snack shop where you taste oranda before buying: Cheongchuni
In short
Cheongchuni Oranda is a traditional Korean snack shop inside Dongmun Market in Jeju City, where shoppers can taste oranda (crisp puffed rice candy) and gwajul before buying. On a walk through Dongmun Market, the writer sampled the gamtae (sea mustard), yuzu, nut and garlic oranda one by one and took home a gift set of 20 individually wrapped pieces. Unlike the hard oranda of years past, Cheongchuni Oranda's version melts in the mouth and isn't overly sweet, making it a good Jeju souvenir for children and older family members with weaker teeth.

A shop famous for soft oranda
Finding Cheongchuni Oranda inside Jeju Dongmun Market
Cheongchuni Oranda is a traditional snack shop inside Jeju's Dongmun Market selling oranda (a Jeju-style honeycomb-textured cookie) and gwajul (a fried, syrup-glazed rice cracker). It had been a while since I'd been to Dongmun Market! I had some errands nearby so I decided to take a walk around and look at the shops. In a market that's crowded no matter where you go, this oranda shop was the one that made me stop. Everyone was gathered around tasting oranda and gwajul haha. There's no way I could pass up a free tasting!!! haha

I really love oranda, and they were selling all kinds of oranda and gwajul!!! I tried a sample and there was no way I couldn't buy some, ㅜㅜㅜㅜㅜㅜㅜ what is this, why is it so good haha. I used to eat this a lot back in the day... this place is the best...

Whoa... this is the first time I've seen donut-shaped oranda haha. My daughter would totally love this flavor!

There were also lots of different gwajul flavors. The moment I saw the gwajul I thought of my mom haha. My mom really loves gwajul! Next time I visit my parents' house I should stop by and get some. Whenever I used to visit her, she was always eating tangerine gwajul haha. I think she'd love it if I brought her some of this!

Why is Cheongchuni's oranda so soft? Tasting it before buying
At Cheongchuni Oranda you can try a wide variety of oranda and gwajul before buying. I tried one of each, and every single one was so delicious. Not being too sweet is exactly my taste — when something's too sweet I can't eat much of it haha. Both my kid and my husband said it was so soft and tasty. The oranda I used to eat was definitely hard, so how is this so soft... It's perfect for kids or elders with weaker teeth! Highly recommend it as a souvenir for parents or grandparents if you're visiting Jeju ~~~

I agonized over whether to buy oranda, gwajul, or the donut-shaped oranda, and ended up deciding on the oranda gift set! I'll eat this oranda today, and next time I go back to Dongmun Market I'll pick up some gwajul!!!

Round gwajul lined up neatly in rows ~~ soft, crispy, and sweet gwajul! I tried a sample and it was really good.

Gamtae (sea mustard) oranda, the owner's recommendation
While I was looking all over the place, wide-eyed, the owner offered me a piece of gamtae (sea mustard) oranda to try haha,... wow,... this is so good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Soft, with the flavor of gamtae, and sweet... I love eating gamtae wrapped around rice, so this was exactly my taste... honestly, I could just keep eating this.

That donut-shaped oranda with the toppings up there is something kids would really, really love. If my daughter had seen it, she definitely would have begged me to buy it haha.

What's in the oranda gift set? 20 individually wrapped pieces, four flavors
The Cheongchuni Oranda gift set I brought home has 20 individually wrapped pieces of oranda inside. The packaging is so cute ㅠㅠㅠㅠ. It really is perfect as a Jeju travel souvenir — what's inside matters, but the packaging really matters too when you're giving a gift, and this box is so cute ㅠㅜ. Even the tastiest snack falls flat if the packaging isn't pretty, but this one tastes great and the box is cute too... there's no way I couldn't buy it...

The set has a good balance of four flavors: yuzu oranda, nut oranda, garlic oranda, and gamtae oranda.

As soon as I got home I unwrapped the gamtae flavor oranda and ate it,... and it was seriously even better than when I tried it at the shop haha haha

So incredibly soft,...... and not too sweet either,... it's insane,..... if you go to Jeju and leave Dongmun Market without buying this, that's a crime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nut oranda as a car snack on the drive from Dongmun Market
Then I had somewhere to go, so I grabbed a nut-flavored piece and ate it in the car

It melts in your mouth,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, my husband and I split it, and I wished I'd grabbed two,... haha haha. Next time I go to Dongmun Market I need to buy a ton of oranda.
