Aewol noodle restaurant with kids' tableware, rich broth: Handam Guksu

One dish I think you absolutely have to eat in Jeju is gogigguksu (pork noodle soup), so this time I went to Handam Guksu right in front of Handam Beach in Aewol. The rich bone-broth pork noodles were delicious, but what I loved even more was being able to eat while looking out at the sea.

How to get to Handam Guksu in Aewol, and where to park

Handam Guksu is located right near Handam Beach in Aewol, Jeju. It's a great stop while traveling around Aewol, and the layout makes it easy to walk around Handam Beach either before or after your meal.

Parking was easy when there was a spot available right in front of the restaurant. If there's no space, they said using Aewol Handam Parking Lot next to Randy's Donuts or Handam Trail Parking Lot next to Olive Young gets you 1 hour free with a dine-in visit!

Ocean views from every seat: is Handam Guksu good with kids?

The first thing that caught my eye walking into the restaurant was, of course, the ocean view of Handam Beach. Every seat looks out at the sea, so I came for a bowl of pork noodles and ended up fully enjoying a proper Jeju view too. I remember other pork noodle places I've been to being more about the food alone.

At Handam Guksu, the sea spreads out the moment you turn your head, so the whole dining atmosphere felt different.

It also seemed like a good place to visit with kids. They have tableware and utensils ready for children, which made it comfortable for family dining.

What to order from the Handam Guksu menu

At Handam Guksu, we chose one bone-broth pork noodles and one dongchimi bibim noodles (mixed noodles in cold radish water kimchi broth). We also ordered the dombe naengsuyuk (cold sliced boiled pork) I'd been curious about. If you're visiting with kids, the non-spicy bone-broth pork noodles seemed like the safest choice.

They also have handmade black pork tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties), which looks like a great side dish for kids who might not be satisfied with noodles alone.

While waiting for our food, we grabbed kimchi and pickled radish from the self-serve bar. Personally, if you're visiting as two people, I'd recommend trying different types of noodles rather than ordering two bowls of the same pork noodles.

Honest review: bone-broth pork noodles, dongchimi bibim noodles and dombe naengsuyuk

The bone-broth pork noodles that came out first were quite generous just from the look of it. There was really a lot of pork piled on top of the noodles. I hadn't even ordered a large portion, but the amount of noodles and meat alike made for a filling bowl on its own.

What stuck with me most was the broth. I took a sip and the bone-broth flavor was way richer than I expected.

Some pork noodle places I've been to had relatively light broths, but here it was so rich and savory it briefly reminded me of sundaeguk (blood sausage soup) — genuinely delicious to my taste.

And the dongchimi bibim noodles we also ordered had a completely different charm!! You pour in as much of the broth as you like, to taste.

The pork was shredded finely too, so as I ate it, it gave off a slight cho-gyeguksu (cold chicken noodle) vibe. After the rich, hot pork noodles, the refreshing dongchimi bibim noodles hit just right — the combo of the two dishes worked really well together. Ordering one of each to share was such a good call!! Haha.

The dombe naengsuyuk I ordered out of curiosity was also tastier than expected. At first I thought cold boiled pork might feel a bit unfamiliar.

But it was sliced thin, so eating it cold didn't feel odd at all, and it had a chewy texture the more you chewed. It was great to pair one bite at a time between the pork noodles and the bibim noodles, so I was glad I'd ordered it as a side.

Is Handam Guksu worth a stop in Aewol?
