Signature photo of the jjukkumi set at Bulnaneun Jjukkumi Yuryang branch

Hi, this is Sinkomulne. Today, after dropping my kid off, I hiked Taejosan! Breathing in the fresh air worked up an appetite by lunchtime, so while scouting nearby restaurants I dropped by Bulnaneun Jjukkumi Yuryang branch, a spicy octopus (jjukkumi) spot~ Let me introduce this jjukkumi restaurant right away — five side dishes, shrimp longer and plumper than a palm, and spice levels you can choose from mild, medium, or hot.

Is there enough parking at Bulnaneun Jjukkumi in Yuryang-dong?

Bulnaneun Jjukkumi has parking for about 25 cars! Even on a weekday lunch, the lot was packed, which proves it's a popular spot~ We managed to snag the very last space and headed straight in!

Outdoor terrace seating set up beside the entrance

There are about 6 terrace seats set up to the left of the entrance and near the parking lot, which seems perfect for a coffee after your meal. It was raining that day so we couldn't sit outside, unfortunately, but next time it'd be nice to relax out there~

Before you reach the counter, there's a milk coffee and water dispenser station!

Inside: private rooms and open tables

We ended up sitting at an open table! It was so busy with lunchtime customers that we couldn't find a seat at first~ Luckily a staff member made room for us right away!

There are soft drinks and alcohol, so you can pick whatever suits you~

Wooden high chair provided at the restaurant

Lots of families with babies seem to come here too, since there were wooden high chairs available!

What's on the self-bar?

Self-bar with small dishes, tongs, and scissors

The self-bar has small dishes, tissues, ssamjang (dipping sauce), tongs, and scissors,

Self-bar stocked with lettuce, shredded radish, and other side dishes

and if you run out of side dishes during your meal, you can grab more yourself from the self-bar! There are kids' utensils, small plates, lettuce, shredded radish, seasoned bean sprouts, radish salad, cheongyang chili, garlic, eolgali greens, shredded lettuce, ssamu (pickled radish), salad, and salad dressing.

What comes in the jjukkumi set: sides, shrimp and pot rice

Table spread of side dishes served with the jjukkumi set

After ordering the set menu, the side dishes started arriving! Cabbage salad with dressing, lettuce, bean sprouts mixed with various vegetables, radish salad, and cold cucumber-seaweed soup! They also gave us a big bowl for mixing the jjukkumi and a bowl for the soup!

Plate of fresh lettuce drizzled with sauce

The lettuce was really fresh! It came with a slightly tangy sauce drizzled on it, which paired well, so I mixed it right in when I stirred up the spicy jjukkumi!

Whole shrimp bigger than a hand with shrimp sauce

The shrimp were bigger than an adult woman's hand and looked so tempting~ There was a shrimp sauce too — sweet, and it paired really well with the shrimp!

Hot pot rice with broth poured in to make sungnyung

The hot pot rice that comes with the jjukkumi — once you scoop the rice out, they pour hot broth into the pot so you can drink it as sungnyung (scorched rice water)! After eating the spicy jjukkumi, that warm sungnyung really helps everything settle!

Bulnaneun Jjukkumi served on a hot plate at mild spice level

How spicy is the mild level, really?

Finally, the main dish — Bulnaneun Jjukkumi! Now I get why it's called 'fire-breaking octopus'! We can't handle spice well so we ordered mild, but if we'd gotten hot, our mouths would've been on fire~ Mild really seems like the right level for people who truly can't do spicy food~ The spicy-but-sweet sauce met fresh, plump jjukkumi, the seasoning soaked in perfectly, and we cleared the whole bowl!

Large bowl with jjukkumi and radish salad mixed in

Add in the jjukkumi and radish salad too,

Jjukkumi bibimbap mixed with plenty of lettuce

then load up on lettuce and mix it all together to finish off a jjukkumi bibimbap! Eating this after hiking Taejosan is truly the best~

Sungnyung from the hot pot rice enjoyed at the end of the meal

After finishing the jjukkumi, a sip of sungnyung to cleanse the palate wraps up the meal on a happy note! If you're hiking Taejosan, why not try this jjukkumi restaurant? With side dishes that pair perfectly with jjukkumi and adjustable spice levels, I had a great lunch at Bulnaneun Jjukkumi Yuryang branch~
