Late weeknight sundae-guk set with rib soup in Goyang: Pyeongando

My dad's favorite food is sundae-guk, and I noticed a new place in Hwajeong-dong that looked clean and had good reviews. Plus they do unlimited sundae refills, so I went straight there!

I visited Pyeongando Restaurant Hwajeong Branch, right in front of the main entrance of the Deogyang District Office. It's about a 3-minute walk from Exits 1 and 2 of Hwajeong Station, so accessibility is really good. It's on the first floor of the Tous les Jours building, so it was easy to find.

There's a mechanical parking lot in the building, but it's only for small cars, so if you drive an SUV or a larger vehicle you'd better use a nearby public lot. Hwajeong Public Parking Lot No. 1 and the Deogyang District Office parking lot are both a 1-minute walk away, so parking isn't much of a worry.

The vibe on a late weeknight evening

The interior was really clean — since it's a newly opened gukbap restaurant in Hwajeong, everything felt tidy and pleasant. The tables were spaced generously, so it looked like a good spot for solo diners, families, and coworker groups alike.

Even though it was late on a weeknight, customers kept streaming in nonstop. Some people were drinking, others were having dinner with family, so it seemed like an easy place to grab a comfortable meal.

Menu and sundae refill hours

Here's the menu. There was a whole range of Hwajeong-dong gukbap, from the sundae-guk set to spicy sundae-guk, somaerigukbap (ox head soup), yukgaejang (spicy beef soup), and ppyeo-haejangguk. If you order a set, it comes with steamed pork and blood sausage.

They also give you a perk for a Naver receipt review — if two people at a table write one, you get a whole bottle of alcohol or galbi mandu, which felt like a total steal.

The most surprising part: unlimited sundae refills are actually a thing here. It runs during lunch from 11:30 to 2pm, and dinner from 5:30 to 8pm — timed exactly to meal hours, so it's a real treat for anyone who loves sundae.

The self-serve bar was really clean too, which made grabbing side dishes pleasant.

First, the side dishes: garlic chives, diced radish kimchi, and cabbage kimchi, all a good match for gukbap. As I mentioned, the self-serve bar is kept clean, so you can go back for more if you run out.

The steamed pork and blood sausage that come with the set were great — instead of the usual glass-noodle sundae, it was real glutinous rice sundae. The portion was generous, and both the sundae and the pork were savory, so I felt full before the gukbap even arrived.

So how does the sundae-guk broth taste?

Finally, the gukbap arrived. I took a spoonful of the broth and it was cleaner than I expected. The heaviness of a rich ox-bone base was still there, but it wasn't overly greasy or heavy. I could eat it all the way through without getting tired of it.

Among the gukbap places in Hwajeong-dong, this one seemed to have really well-balanced broth. There was barely any of that distinctive sundae smell, and overall it was light and enjoyable.

How generous was the rib soup set?

The ppyeo-haejangguk we ordered alongside was delicious too. It came with two big chunky bones, so it looked really hearty from the start. As I picked the meat off, there turned out to be more meat attached than I expected — just eating the meat alone could have filled me up haha. The broth was rich and savory too, perfect for mixing with rice.
