Weekend lunch gukbap sets near Hwajeong Station: Pyeongando Restaurant

Today I'm introducing a 24-hour gukbap (Korean soup with rice) spot near Hwajeong Station, Pyeongando Restaurant Hwajeong Branch (평안도식당 화정점)!

A single bowl of gukbap here is already hearty, but you can also use the self-serve bar for unlimited sundae (blood sausage), liver, and lung, so it's a place where you can eat a really filling meal. Plus you get to try Pyeongando-style chapssal sundae (glutinous rice sausage), which has a clean but savory, delicate flavor!

How far is it from Hwajeong Station? Location, parking, hours

📍 Location

About a 3-minute walk from Exit 3 of Hwajeong Station, so accessibility is really good.

🅿️ Parking

The parking lot in the building is mechanical and only fits small cars, so I'd recommend using nearby buildings/streets or the Deogyang-gu Office parking lot right in front. (My reasonable guess: the Deogyang-gu Office employees probably eat here a LOT for weekday lunch 🤓)

⭐Open 24 hours, every day⭐ (I really love that you can drop in without worrying, whether it's late at night or early morning!)

Exterior

It's on the ground floor of the building so it's easy to find, and the white sign really stands out.

Outside the restaurant there's also a sign showing when the head meat is freshly boiled. Times are 11:00, 13:00, 18:00, and 21:00 — worth keeping in mind!

Interior and the self-serve bar

The restaurant is spacious and comfortable, so it seems like a good spot for group gatherings too. We visited for weekend lunch, and there were already lots of customers eating. There was a mix of ages, and I saw a lot of families as well.

You order from the tablet PC mounted at each table!

Aprons are stocked around the restaurant too, so they're easy to grab. Spoons and tissues are in the drawer under the table, just so you know!

On one side there's a self-serve bar with kimchi, kkakdugi (radish kimchi), peppers, cheongyang peppers, onion, garlic, and sundae.

Menu and prices

Check out the menu board too! We ordered the Pyeongando sundae-guk set (₩15,000) and the spicy sundae-guk set (₩17,000). The sets come with sundae-guk plus extra sundae and head meat! Looking around at other tables, quite a few people were ordering gamjatang (pork bone soup) too — we decided to try that next time.

What we ordered and the basic side dishes

The basic side dishes: peppers, onion, kimchi, kkakdugi, chives, ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste).

Pepper, perilla seed powder, dadaegi (chili paste), and salted shrimp were also set out, so you can season to your taste.

The sundae and pyeonyuk (sliced boiled meat) came out first. Six pieces of sundae, five of pyeonyuk. I already felt how generous it was before the meal even started, and then the sundae-guk arrived and I was truly amazed!

How was the spicy sundae-guk?

Let me show you my fiancé's spicy sundae-guk too! A color that's basically guaranteed to be delicious,,

Same deal — add chives and perilla powder and mix,,, wow... I just stirred it, but can you see how much meat and sundae there is?

How did it taste?

Time to actually dig in. lol

You know you're supposed to take the hot sundae out first, right?

The broth was rich yet clean, and the meat was tender with no pork smell at all! Eating it together with kimchi was an especially great combo.

You know that sundae inside a sundae-guk that soaks up the broth and gets that deep, moist flavor? So delicious!

The sundae and pyeonyuk served alongside were satisfying too! I ate the sundae with salted shrimp and ssamjang, and the chewy pyeonyuk was tasty as well. Did you know people in Gyeongsang-do eat sundae with ssamjang? I learned that from my fiancé and it was such a surprise! In Gyeonggi-do, sundae is a salt thing, isn't it?

I stole a bite of my fiancé's spicy sundae-guk too. (I'm a blogger, so I have to know how it tastes, okay 😉) But seriously, the spicy sundae-guk's broth was amazingly spicy-and-refreshing at the same time, and the meat and sundae soaking in that broth were especially delicious. It would be perfect as a hangover cure too!

Couldn't even touch the unlimited self-serve bar

Something we kept saying while eating: wow, this is really good. Wow, this is a lot of food.

Honestly, I saw in the restaurant's description that the self-serve bar had liver, lung, and chapssal sundae, and I really wanted to try them?? But the base portions were so generous that we were already way too full to use it.

Receipt review event

For reference: if you write a Naver receipt review, 1 person gets a bag of Pyeongando mini yakgwa (honey cookie), and 2 people get soju or beer or a plate of galbi mandu (rib dumplings)!
