Kid-friendly brunch in Sangmu, Gwangju: shrimp oil pasta at Bueokgan

In short

Bueokgan Sangmu Branch is a European-style brunch restaurant with a Roman hotel concept on Seogwangju-ro in Seo-gu, Gwangju. Visiting with a baby, the writer ordered shrimp anchovy oil pasta at 18,000 won, truffle mushroom pizza at 22,000 won, sweet potato fries and baguette, and the staff brought out baby dishes and a high chair. The oil pasta went down well with the baby, but the truffle mushroom pizza had burnt mushroom tops that tasted bitter — the first plate the writer has ever left unfinished here.

European-style interior and outdoor tables at Bueokgan

There are stylish outdoor tables set up in front of the restaurant — on a breezy day, I'd love to eat out there. Bueokgan, the Sangmu brunch favorite, has such a sleek European interior both inside and out that it feels like you've traveled somewhere, and it instantly lifts the mood haha. Of course it's also known for its great food, so lots of families and groups come here too.

Coat racks and a high chair for children

There are plenty of coat hooks for outerwear, and chairs set up for the little customers too.

Bueokgan, the Sangmu brunch favorite with a Roman-hotel-concept European feel, also serves wine to match the atmosphere — it would pair really well with the main dishes. If I weren't driving, I could stay here forever haha. We took our usual corner sofa seat.

What we ordered at Bueokgan and what it cost

Today we ordered shrimp anchovy oil pasta (₩18,000), truffle mushroom pizza (₩22,000), sweet potato fries (₩10,000), and baguette, 5 pieces (₩3,000).

Five pieces of baguette served as pre-meal bread

The baguette, lightly drizzled with oil, was crisp yet moist — great as a pre-meal bread.

Crispy fried sweet potato fries

The sweet potato fries, which I always end up ordering at Bueokgan, are sweet and crunchy — perfect for nibbling on between courses.

The shrimp were big and plump, giving it great texture, and the oil aroma was rich and delicious.

We usually only order cream pasta, so it made me happy that the baby ate well the first time we tried an oil pasta.

Why the truffle mushroom pizza disappointed

We've always ordered the jambon pizza, so this time we tried the truffle mushroom pizza. It's built on a homemade tomato sauce base with chewy mushrooms, finished with truffle oil and chopped scallions.

The mushrooms' rich aroma was impressive, but the tops were quite charred, giving a bitter taste with every bite. I thought the mushroom pizza would suit the baby better than the jambon one, but since it had so many burnt spots and tasted bitter, this was the first dish here we left unfinished. Next time I think I'll just stick with the jambon pizza.

Our lunch table was full of hearty dishes, and we had an enjoyable, delicious meal.
