Our household eats out pretty often. This week, somehow, we ended up eating grilled pork two nights in a row, Wednesday and Thursday. I like meat, but after two days straight I wanted something different today. So we went looking for hot clam soup and found Taegine Jogae Jeongol Geomdan Ara Branch, a seafood spot near Ara Station.

What time to arrive to avoid a weekday evening wait

At Taegine Jogae Jeongol Geomdan Ara Branch we got in without any wait at 6pm on a weekday, and by around 6:30pm the place was already full. Restaurants in Geomdan New Town are genuinely competitive. With so many people living here, new spots get discovered fast, and word of a good place spreads quickly too. I've visited this branch a few times since it first opened, and it still gets a steady wait to this day.

Actually, last Friday I'd planned to meet friends here, but the wait was over 30 minutes at the time, so we gave up and went elsewhere. This time I moved a bit earlier and got in at 6pm with no wait at all. By the time we were eating, around 6:30pm, the place was already full. When we left a bit past 7pm, it wasn't a long line, but a few parties were waiting for tables to open up. Even on a weekday evening, peak hours can bring a wait, so if you want to avoid it, go a little early.

Why tang-bossam for two works with a 4-year-old

Table spread of tang-bossam for two
Clam soup and bossam served in a small pot

As the name suggests, Taegine Jogae Jeongol's signature dish is a clam hot pot (jogae jeongol) served in a large pot piled with clams, and we've ordered it before. But our 4-year-old, Mango, has never been fed clams separately, so this time we ordered tang-bossam for two so she could eat with us. Tang-bossam comes with clam soup in a small pot instead of the big hot pot, served alongside bossam (boiled pork belly). (You could also swap the clam soup for seafood soup or pollack soup.) The adults ate the clam soup while Mango had the bossam pork she loves — this combination worked better for our family.

And something that quietly matters a lot when eating out with a kid: Taegine Jogae Jeongol Geomdan Ara Branch had a baby chair and baby tableware ready. In Geomdan New Town, where a lot of families with young kids eat out, whether a restaurant has these basics covered matters when choosing a place. It was also nice that, since Mango doesn't eat clams yet, we could choose a menu like ours that comes with bossam on the side.

Free yeolmu bibimbap at the self-bar

Another great thing about Taegine Jogae Jeongol is the self-bar. It has two rice options, barley rice and white rice, and you can make your own yeolmu bibimbap (rice mixed with young radish greens) — also free. Dessert ice cream is free too!

I picked a rice, added the yeolmu, and mixed up a bowl.

A bowl of homemade yeolmu bibimbap

We'd already ordered clam soup and bossam, and then got yeolmu bibimbap with no extra charge on top of that — at some point I thought, "how much more are they going to give us?" haha. Overall, the place left a strong impression of generosity.

Clam soup and bossam in one order

The clam soup that comes with tang-bossam isn't the big pot of a full clam hot pot — it's a small pot of clam soup meant to be eaten alongside bossam. We simmered it at the table and fished out clams one by one. After two straight nights of grilled meat, switching to a hot, soupy dish felt like exactly the right call for the evening.

We ate bossam in between too. Being able to get both clams and meat in one order, instead of ordering them separately, was the biggest strength of tang-bossam.

Clam soup and bossam eaten together

Tang-bossam, ordered per person, seems especially well suited if your group is small and a big clam hot pot feels like too much, or if you're with a kid and a clam-hot-pot-only order feels awkward.

Free kalguksu noodles, one per serving ordered

And finally, of course, kalguksu (knife-cut noodles). Taegine Jogae Jeongol gives free kalguksu noodles matched to the number of servings you ordered. We'd ordered tang-bossam for two, so after eating through most of the clam soup, we added kalguksu to the remaining broth to finish the meal.

At the time of our visit, there was also a review event offering grilled shrimp, so we tried that too. With this bonus dish on top of the main menu, the table felt even more generous.

From yeolmu bibimbap to free kalguksu noodles, there was plenty to eat beyond the main dish, and with a baby chair and tableware ready, it was an easy place to visit with a kid. Tables fill up fast even on weekday evenings, so if you want to avoid the wait, go a bit earlier than peak hours. If you're craving a hearty clam hot pot or want clam soup and bossam in one sitting, and you're looking for seafood near Ara Station, Taegine Jogae Jeongol Geomdan Ara Branch is worth considering.
