Hi, this is Briefer! :) When you're craving a hearty, satisfying meal on a Jeju trip, nothing beats juicy black pork. This time I visited 'Jeju Samchun,' known as a must-try spot near Hamdeok Beach.

My first impression of the building was much more stylish than I expected. It's a clean standalone building blending with a stone wall, so it stood out even from a distance. Cute-feeling lights were set up in front of the entrance. My anticipation was already rising before I even opened the door, haha.

The alley around the shop had a quiet yet charming Jeju vibe. Even though it's an alley, there was easy street parking right beside it, which made it convenient to find.

Inside Jeju Samchun: interior and seating

The Hamdeok branch of Jeju Samchun has a spacious hall with generous spacing between tables. Walking in, I was greeted by a wide, comfortable hall space. The tables were spaced well apart, making it easy to chat comfortably while eating. 👍 There are also window seats by a folding door on one side. Grilling meat while looking out at the view on a cool day sounds pretty great, right?

On one side of the store, there was a trustworthy certificate for Jeju pork sales. Knowing it was top-grade black pork that had gone through thorough aging made me look forward to the taste even more. 😄

While waiting for our meat after ordering, I looked around the store and noticed the meat aging at low temperature. Watching the flavor develop carefully inside the reddish-lit aging chamber was quite impressive.

While looking at the smart screen on the table, I noticed a Naver photo review event offering free kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew). You've got to grab these good deals when you see them, haha.

Soon after, neatly arranged side dishes were set on our table one by one. It was a lineup that paired perfectly with the meat, and I loved it.

A variety of sauces and seasonings that enhance the meat's flavor were also set out. From salty myeongnan (pollock roe) and garlic soy sauce to breadcrumb salt and myeoljeot, it was fun to pick and dip according to taste. 😁

Jocha Set plating: how thick are the pork neck and belly?

Jeju Samchun's Jocha Set comes with vividly marbled meat, a dol hareubang (stone grandfather statue) decoration, and even a mushroom engraved with the restaurant's name. Our long-awaited main dish finally arrived, and the presentation was seriously amazing! Thanks to the special styling that showed off the meat's freshness, it was a treat for the eyes even before the first bite. 😆

The Jocha Set we ordered had such vivid red marbling that it made my mouth water just looking at it. The cute dol hareubang decoration and the mushroom clearly engraved with 'Jeju Samchun' made it fun to photograph too. The special(?) touch of neatly arranging tangy, savory white kimchi in a circle around the edge of the grill was also very much to my liking, haha.

The pork neck in particular was sliced impressively thick. The sizzling sound as it cooked on the grill made this flavor impossible to resist.

The savory pork belly that came alongside had just the right ratio of fat to lean meat. It's top-grade black pork where you can really taste the deep flavor unique to aged meat.

Salt, myeoljeot and myeongnan gimssam: how to eat the black pork

Jeju Samchun black pork is best tasted with salt first, then moving on to myeoljeot and myeongnan gimssam. The classic move with the first well-cooked piece is to dip it simply in salt. The way the clean juices spread across your mouth is genuinely something to marvel at.

First bite of black pork dipped only in salt

Dipping the meat into the myeoljeot bubbling on the grill and pulling it out brings out even more umami. It's an essential combo when you want to feel a rich, deep flavor.

Placing a golden-brown piece of meat on well-toasted seaweed with a bit of myeongnan on top makes for a truly unique delicacy. The salty yet savory myeongnan blends with the meat's juices and really brings out the flavor. Whether you put it straight on the meat or wrap it in seaweed, myeongnan alone lets you enjoy a rich variety of flavor combinations, keeping my mouth happy the whole meal. 😁

Doesn't the combination of golden-grilled meat cuts and vegetables filling the grill look delicious? With mu-ssam (pickled radish), scallion shreds, and wrap vegetables all available as accompaniments, there was never a dull moment. The friendly staff also grilled everything to just the right doneness, making the whole experience easy and delicious. ^^

Finishing with kimchi jjigae and zero-sugar cola

The kimchi jjigae we had afterward had a really rich, spicy broth that cut right through the meat's oiliness. It was packed with big chunks of meat, making it fun to fish out pieces, and it was the kind of dish that makes you polish off a whole bowl of rice. 👍

Finishing with a refreshing zero-sugar cola to cleanse the palate after all that rich meat was the perfect ending. If you're looking for a proper black pork spot near Hamdeok Beach, be sure to stop by 'Jeju Samchun.' From the generous Jocha Set to the friendly tableside grilling service, you're bound to enjoy a satisfying, feel-good meal.
