Hamdeok self-serve wrap bar mackerel: Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap
In short
Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap is a Korean restaurant that recently opened on the Hamdeok coastal road in Jeju. The braised mackerel was seasoned just right, neither salty nor bland, with plump flesh, and the self-serve bar held several kinds of wrap vegetables so diners can build wraps to their own taste. Side dishes including ganjang gejang (soy-marinated crab) came with the meal, making Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap a good choice for a mild, unfussy meal on a Jeju trip.

I had godeungeo ssambap (braised mackerel wrap rice) at Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap, a restaurant that recently opened on the Hamdeok coastal road.

If you like braised mackerel in Jeju, here's a new place worth checking out. I was passing by the Hamdeok coastal road and stopped in at the newly opened Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap.

As the name suggests, the signature dish is godeungeo ssambap. I liked the clean interior and the friendly service, and above all, the food came out looking tidy and appetizing across the board, so I had a genuinely pleasant meal.

Maybe because it's a new spot, the restaurant itself was really clean and comfortable. The tables weren't cramped and everything felt well organized, so it seemed like a good place to bring the family too.
What wrap vegetables are at the self-serve bar?
The self-serve bar at Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap has a wide variety of wrap vegetables that go well with the braised mackerel. This bar was actually one of my favorite parts of the meal — and it was kept neat and clean too.

Braised mackerel is delicious just spooned over rice, but wrapping rice and mackerel flesh together in a leaf gives you a whole different flavor, right?

I liked that there were so many types of wrap greens to choose from depending on your taste. And the range of basic side dishes was impressive too.

From kimchi to a whole lineup of other banchan (side dishes), everything paired well with rice — I felt like I could finish a bowl of rice on the side dishes alone. And get this: ganjang gejang (soy-marinated crab) came as a side dish too!

I ordered godeungeo ssambap, and having ganjang gejang come along with it made for a great match with rice.
How was the braised mackerel's seasoning and flesh?
The braised mackerel at Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap was seasoned just right — not too strong, not too bland. Finally, the main event: braised mackerel 😄 The sauce is really what makes or breaks this dish.

Rather than a punchy, heavily seasoned sauce, it was the kind of flavor that let you taste the mackerel itself while still pairing well with rice.
And I liked how plump the mackerel flesh was. Flaking off a bit with chopsticks, laying it over rice, adding some of that delicious kimchi — braised mackerel really is a rice thief, as they say.
The mackerel and kimchi combination in particular worked really well. Rice and mackerel flesh in a wrap leaf with a little sauce was tasty, and it was also great with kimchi — I ended up trying it several different ways.

A braised mackerel recipe 50 years in the making
Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap has apparently been making braised mackerel for a long time. They say they hand-select the mackerel and use fresh ingredients, which probably explains why the food felt clean and well put together overall.

Beyond godeungeo ssambap, there's a wide range of Jeju specialties on the menu, including galchi jorim (braised hairtail), galchi guk (hairtail soup), black pork duruchigi, grilled mackerel, and grilled tilefish. It could be a good option if you're looking for a truly Jeju-style meal during your trip.
Looking for mild braised mackerel in Hamdeok?

Since Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap is newly opened, the restaurant was clean and the staff were friendly, which made a great first impression. The braised mackerel was well seasoned with plump flesh, and having the variety of side dishes, ganjang gejang, and plenty of wrap vegetables together made the meal feel really satisfying.

Since it's located right on the Hamdeok coastal road, it's a good stop if you're traveling or driving around the Hamdeok area and looking for somewhere to eat. If you're craving a clean, filling, not-too-intense meal of godeungeo ssambap during your Jeju trip, it's worth a visit.

That was my delicious meal at the newly opened braised mackerel spot in Hamdeok, Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap.
