Sokcho makguksu restaurant, dongchimi sipped on the side: Topgol

In short

Sokcho Topgol Makguksu Main Branch is a Korean restaurant specialising in deulmemak, perilla oil buckwheat noodles (makguksu), tucked between the public parking lots at Sokcho Beach. The order was deulmemak at 13,000 won, pollack sashimi buckwheat noodles at 13,000 won and a potato pancake at 17,000 won: the deulmemak was mixed with extra perilla oil instead of the dongchimi (radish water kimchi) broth, with the dongchimi drunk separately, while the pollack sashimi noodles got a spoon of seasoning sauce halfway through for extra savoury depth. If you want to keep that nutty perilla flavour intact, sip the dongchimi on the side at Sokcho Topgol Makguksu Main Branch.

Deulmemak, 13,000 won: extra perilla oil changes everything

Deulmemak (perilla oil buckwheat noodles) is ₩13,000, and it's a specialty of specialties. Visually it looked... so-so at first, honestly kind of plain, but once I mixed in extra perilla oil, it completely transformed — the kind of dish where you can't stop reaching for more. If you're visiting Sokcho Beach, stop by Sokcho Topgol Makguksu Main Branch and make sure to try the deulmemak!!

Why sip the dongchimi on the side instead of pouring it in

Oh, tapping the tablet menu once brings up a tip for eating it the tasty way, but I'd recommend just adding more perilla oil and mixing it in, then drinking the dongchimi (radish water kimchi) separately. Why? Because the distinctive nutty flavor of the perilla oil buckwheat noodles meets the fruity dongchimi and turns into something totally different — a really unique taste, but one where the nuttiness disappears. Personal taste varies, so take this just as a reference!

Pollack sashimi buckwheat noodles, 13,000 won: add the sauce halfway

Pollack sashimi buckwheat noodles cost ₩13,000. It's a familiar combination of pollack sashimi with buckwheat noodles. Adding a little dongchimi gave it a bit of a mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) feel, somehow. I ate it plain at first, then poured in dongchimi, and from the halfway point added the seasoning sauce set on the table, the way you would with naengmyeon (cold noodles) — the savoriness really came through.

Potato pancake, 17,000 won: thinly julienned and crisp

The potato pancake is ₩17,000. Potato pancake is something I always order in Sokcho, and Sokcho Topgol Makguksu's version comes out thinly julienned and pan-fried. Round, crisped up nicely, and satisfyingly salty ◡̈
