I heard there was a place in Nonsan famous for good-value hanjeongsik (Korean set-meal course) that's been running for 25 years across two generations, so I went to check it out.

Where is Sonamu Hanjeongsik in Nonsan, and what are the hours?

Sonamu Hanjeongsik is at 357 Nonsandae-ro, Building A, Nonsan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. It's open 11:00–20:00, with a break time from 15:00–17:00, last order at 14:00 and 19:00, and closed every Wednesday.

Exterior of the Sonamu Hanjeongsik building and parking lot

The parking lot is spacious, and true to the name, there are quite a few pine trees around.

Across the street there's an apartment complex.

Inside, a lawn spreads out peacefully.

Private rooms in a two-story hanok, with space for large groups

Sonamu Hanjeongsik is built as a two-story hanok with fairly high ceilings, and there are many private rooms, so it's great for those who care about privacy. There's even a waiting area right at the entrance, showing some thoughtfulness for guests who have to wait.

When I arrived, it was past lunchtime but there were still quite a few customers. There are more spaces upstairs too.

I was shown to a room. Since I'd reserved ahead, the basic side dishes were already set. After ordering, I took a look around the neighboring spaces.

Sonamu Hanjeongsik menu and prices

  • Gukhwa Jeongsik (국화정식) ₩30,000
  • Sonamu Jeongsik (소나무정식) ₩43,000

My companion and I ordered the house's signature Sonamu Jeongsik. These days most Korean set-meal courses easily run well over ₩50,000, so it seems this place has stuck to its price as a spot known for good value. Here's what the Sonamu Jeongsik course included.

I wanted to add bokbunja (Korean black raspberry wine) or a Guinness draft, but had to drive, so I held back...

What comes with the ₩43,000 Sonamu Jeongsik course?

The ₩43,000 Sonamu Jeongsik course started with shared side dishes and pumpkin porridge, then moved through individual hot-pot rice and doenjang stew (soybean paste stew), grilled hairtail, soy-marinated shrimp, braised beef short rib, seasonal salad, stir-fried octopus, Geumsan ginseng fritters, perilla oil cold noodles, and finished with yuja (citron) yanggaeng (jelly) and a dessert drink. Nuts like cashews and purple sweet potato also came out as snacks.

Pumpkin porridge came out first. The pumpkin's aroma really got the appetite going ^^

Individual hot-pot rice, doenjang stew, and personal side dishes came next.

The doenjang soup was delicious too, with a slightly spicy edge that felt a bit different from the usual doenjang soup.

[Grilled hairtail] It was a big hairtail, so there was plenty to eat haha.

[Soy-marinated shrimp] also came out well-aged and easy to eat. Honestly I'm not usually a big fan of soy-marinated shrimp, but this place's version had such rich umami that I really enjoyed it haha.

[24-hour low-temperature braised beef short rib] This seems to be the house's signature (add-on) menu item. It was so tender I wanted to order more!!

[Sweet rice bukkumi (pan-fried rice cake)] Anyone who's tried it knows how good bukkumi is.

Stir-fried octopus

I really love scraping up the crispy rice from the bottom of the hot-pot rice and eating it together — it kind of settles the stomach~

Geumsan ginseng fritters. Dipping the crispy-fried ginseng in the sauce made it even better haha.

[Braised short rib] It was genuinely so tender and easy to eat, and just delicious.

The stew's seasoning went well with the rice too. The perilla oil cold noodles from the mill shown up top were a small portion, so it was easy to enjoy alongside everything else without feeling overwhelmed.

The yuja yanggaeng was refreshingly tangy and cleaned up the palate nicely.

I finished off with a strawberry juice for dessert. It came out nice and cold, which made it even better to drink.

Is Sonamu Hanjeongsik worth it? Final thoughts

I had a high-quality hanjeongsik that clearly showed a lot of care. Honestly, it was more satisfying than I expected. If you're in Nonsan and want to enjoy a good-value hanjeongsik course comfortably in a place with real atmosphere, I'd recommend Sonamu Hanjeongsik.
