A Western restaurant in Haenggung-dong where you can enjoy wood-fired pizza and fresh pasta in a romantic atmosphere: The European Haenggung Main Branch
Where is The European Haenggung Main Branch and what are its hours?
The European Haenggung Main Branch is at 21-1 Haenggung-ro, Paldal-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi, 1st floor, open daily from 11:30 to 21:30 with last order at 21:00. Both takeout and reservations are available.
I went on a Haenggung-dong date last weekend after a long while! Weekends in Haenggung-dong get so crowded that I was struggling to decide where to eat, so I booked The European Haenggung Main Branch, well known for being a great-atmosphere Western restaurant. It sits right in the center of Haenggung-dong, right in front of Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, so it's perfect for wandering around Haenggung-dong or Haengridan-gil before or after the meal, and a great fit to pair with a Hwaseong Haenggung Palace date course!

Since my reservation was for opening time, I naturally pulled off a weekend opening run ✨️ Going early meant it was quiet for a weekend, so I could enjoy the meal at a relaxed pace. If you're looking for a great-atmosphere date restaurant in Haenggung-dong, pay attention to this post :)

What are the atmosphere and seating like at The European?
The European Haenggung Main Branch had a warm, calm feel with wood-tone interiors and soft lighting. The sparkling chandelier, classic framed art, and bold red curtains combined to make it feel like an old-school European restaurant! The atmosphere is romantic, so it's a big recommend for a blind date or a Haenggung-dong date spot ✨️

Wow, walking further in revealed an even wider space. There was a variety of seating, from tables for two to large tables good for bigger groups, and the area displaying wine and other drinks made the atmosphere feel even more upscale. The inner section is divided off privately, so it seems perfect for family meals as well as group gatherings like friend meetups or work dinners!
A special point about The European Haenggung branch!! You get to taste authentic wood-fired pizza from a chef who previously worked at the Shilla Hotel! And it's not just for eating in-store — the wood-fired pizza is available for takeout too. Great to pair with a cold beer at home. If you love a pizza here, take it home and enjoy it again!!

The kitchen is open, so I could watch the chef making the pizzas and baking them directly in the big wood-fired oven. Seeing the oven blazing away built up the anticipation even before the pizza arrived!+_+

Centered on wood-fired pizza, they also had fresh pasta, gnocchi, ravioli, lasagna, arancini, steak and salad, soup, and even dessert. The wood-fired pizza lineup was really varied too — signature options like rocket ham burrata cheese, jambon truffle fougasse, and steak burrata pizza, plus classics like margherita, quattro formaggi, and shrimp garlic pizza to suit your taste!
There was also a whole lineup of pastas that sound delicious just from their names — beef ragu fresh pasta, seafood tomato fresh pasta, truffle cream gnocchi, fresh truffle cheese rigatoni. With steak dishes too, it's a Western restaurant that works for dates, blind dates, and anniversaries alike. It's not just pizza and pasta — appetizers through dessert are all covered, so it was nice to enjoy it almost like a course.
Do you need a reservation at The European Haenggung?
Since I was visiting on a weekend, I booked ahead through Naver Reservation just in case there was a wait! Thanks to the reservation, I was seated right away and could eat at a relaxed pace :) If you're planning a weekend, date, or anniversary visit, I'd recommend reserving ahead.
What we ordered: arugula jamón burrata pizza and beef ragu fresh pasta
- Signature rocket ham burrata cheese pizza — ₩31,000
- Beef ragu fresh pasta — ₩22,000

First up, drumroll, the beef ragu fresh pasta!

A generous serving of noodles filled a large bowl, topped with a hefty amount of ragu sauce made by slow-simmering finely minced beef and vegetables!
And there was a soft-boiled egg on top too — pretty appetizing just to look at, right? Popping the egg and mixing it evenly into the ragu sauce brought out a rich beefy flavor along with a nutty, smooth touch.

There was no skimping on the meat either — beef came along every time I twirled the noodles. The tomato's gentle acidity and the meat's deep savoriness balanced out so the sauce felt hearty without being salty! The fresh noodles especially had a moist, chewy texture way better than regular dried noodles. The sauce soaked in well between the strands too, so every bite was packed with flavor~! Totally hit the spot for a noodle lover like me.
Scored a cold cider (Sprite-style soda) through the receipt review event! They gave me a glass full of ice to go with it too. Write a review with a food photo and show it to staff to get a complimentary cider.

Ta-da! The European's signature rocket ham burrata cheese pizza arrived too!

Fresh rocket (arugula) and tomatoes plus thin slices of jamón were piled generously on top of the pizza, with a whole round burrata cheese sitting right in the middle! The look of it was so pretty, a big recommend for a date menu — total ladies'-favorite pizza >.<

When I gently cut into the burrata cheese, creamy, soft cheese spread out from inside smoothly. Spread it evenly across the pizza, then wrap it up with jamón and rocket for a bite — it's honey-sweet delicious!

The salty, savory jamón paired with the mild, soft burrata cheese and the slightly bitter, fragrant rocket came together so well!! With the cherry tomatoes adding a touch of freshness too, even with all the generous toppings, it never felt greasy and ate light and refreshing.

Pairing bites with the tangy, crunchy pickled carrot and radish that came alongside cleansed the palate in between, making the pizza even more enjoyable :)

How was the wood-fired pizza crust at The European?
For wood-fired pizza, the dough is everything, right? The European's wood-fired pizza had appetizing char marks dotted along the edges. The outside was crisped up nicely while the inside kept its moist, chewy texture!!

I usually leave most of the crust edge when I eat pizza, but this was clearly different being wood-fired. Crisp outside, chewy inside~ and the more I chewed, the more nutty flavor came through, so even the crust ends were so delicious. I neatly finished off even the crust I'd normally leave behind, hehe.
Why The European works as a Haenggung-dong date course
If you're looking for a great-atmosphere Western restaurant in Haenggung-dong, Suwon, I recommend The European Haenggung Main Branch ❤️ From the charming exterior of red brick and tiled roof to the old-world interior decked out with chandeliers and red curtains, the atmosphere is great, making it a perfect spot for a date or a blind date.
The pizza baked right in the wood-fired oven had a genuinely crisp-outside, chewy-inside crust, and the combination of salty jamón, fragrant rocket, and soft burrata cheese was great, great! The beef ragu fresh pasta also had a deep savory flavor and chewy noodles that were really appealing. It's also great for a walk around Hwaseong Haenggung Palace and Haengridan-gil after the meal, so I'd recommend it as a Haenggung-dong date course :)
