After a long while, my husband and I made a trip down to the Gangneung sea. Walking along Sageunjin Beach, with its refreshing wave sounds and colorful rainbow breakwater, we set off to find a nearby ocean-view café where we could linger over the sea's cool afterglow.
The Sageunjin Beach strip, being one of Gangneung's signature travel spots, is packed with cafés — but among them we headed for Baegya, a café that seemed to hold the deep blue of the East Sea in its very name.
Where to park at Baegya Coffee in Gangneung
Baegya Coffee has a parking lot right in front of the café on the 1st floor, and a bigger lot if you go up the hill road beside the building. We parked at the 'Sageunjin Beach public parking lot' directly across from the café.
Given its easy access along the beach driving route, it seems like the ideal stop for anyone out to enjoy Sageunjin Beach.
Ordering the corn cream shot latte and salt bread at Baegya Coffee
I thought about ordering Baegya's signature Oxigi ice cream, but wanting to sip coffee and soak in the mood instead, I went with the corn cream shot latte, and my husband got an americano.
The bakery smelled so good it was hard to just walk past, so I ended up grabbing a salt bread as if in a trance.
I liked that all the baked goods sat behind glass cases — it looked clean and hygienic, and the display was tidy too.
Seating on each floor: which one has the best sea view?
While waiting for our drinks, we scouted a table. The open ceilings and soft wood tones made for a calm interior, so it took a moment to decide where to sit. The 2nd floor, great for enjoying the ocean view, was full of couples.
Being a large café spanning 1st to 4th floor, it had an elevator too — and I was moved to find a drink holder inside for safely carrying beverages.
On the 3rd floor there were a lot of families on trips and group guests. High chairs are provided on every floor, so it seems like a good place to bring kids.
Whichever floor you sit on, the stair-stepped seating means the ocean view is never blocked — perfect for zoning out over the sea.
How does the corn cream shot latte taste with salt bread?
While I was still looking around for seats, the buzzer for our drinks went off quickly. The first sip of the corn cream shot latte — dark espresso topped with a thick layer of rich, yellow corn cream in a clear glass — brought a wave of emotion: the deep, nutty scent of real corn and the sweet, soft texture of the handmade cream melting in.
After a sip of coffee, sitting still and gazing out at the sea emptied my cluttered head and settled my mind.
The americano was clean and delicious too. Dipping the salt bread into the corn cream, the salty bread and the sweet, nutty cream came together so well it made me smile.

After sitting for a good while, the young couple at the next table mentioned a photo spot on the rooftop, so this not-quite-young-yet couple headed up too.
We struck plenty of poses on the 'Stairway to Heaven,' where you can get a life-shot with a gorgeous sky as the backdrop.
The rooftop, where the setting sun paints a beautiful sunset, was a comfortable spot to sit in the cool September weather. Note: the rooftop is a no-kids zone.
Walking Sageunjin Beach and Gyeongpodae Beach after the café
After thoroughly enjoying the ocean view from the café, we stepped outside to check out the cosmos flowers blooming to one side, take some photos, and enjoy the beach.
Filling our eyes with the blue East Sea, happy with delicious drinks and baked goods —
Walking along Gyeongpodae Beach with my husband afterward, the wide-open sea opened up my heart too.
If you're traveling around Sageunjin Beach or the Gyeongpo area, I'd recommend Baegya, a large ocean-view bakery café in Gangneung — plenty good for a date with your partner, or a relaxed time with family or friends, tasting a sweet corn cream shot latte and delicious bread in that cool ocean mood.
