This time I was looking for a bar in Yongbong-dong and figured jokbal would go well with a drink, so I visited 📍Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch 😊 The two of us had a hearty spread — jokbal, makguksu, and the complimentary odeng-tang and steamed egg. Inside Kkankkanhan Jokbal: roomy, comfortable and fine for groups

The inside of Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch was bigger than I expected and pretty tidy overall! The soft lighting made it feel relaxed, and the tables had generous spacing. It looked great for group seating too — a solid Yongbong-dong bar for family dinners, work gatherings, or meetups!

There's a TV set up right in the middle of the restaurant. On the day I visited, baseball was on, so I ate jokbal while watching the game ⚾

This Yongbong-dong favorite also has a separate smoking room! Nice touch for smokers 😉

Side dishes plus free odeng-tang and steamed egg

Basic side dishes including lettuce wraps and pickled radish

The basic side dishes were set out right after ordering. * Lettuce wraps and salad, pickled radish, dried radish salad, salted shrimp, chogochujang (vinegar chili paste), sliced garlic, ssamjang (dipping paste)

At Kkankkan in Yongbong-dong, odeng-tang and steamed egg came free of charge too. The odeng-tang had two swirled fish cakes and cheongyang chili peppers, giving the broth a sharp kick!

Complimentary odeng-tang with swirled fish cakes

Taking a spoonful of the broth between bites of jokbal felt refreshing 🤤 It pairs especially well as a drinking snack, so if you're looking for a Yongbong-dong bar, this side alone would satisfy you 👍

Soft steamed egg served as a complimentary side

The steamed egg was moist and really soft!

The 48,000 won couple's set: how does old-style king jokbal taste?

♥️ Couple's set (recommended for 2) — old-style king jokbal + makguksu + drink

Table with old-style king jokbal and makguksu together

Our jokbal order was ready in under 10 minutes 👍

Plate of neatly plated old-style king jokbal

The old-style king jokbal I chose had that classic market-jokbal style! It was plated neatly and, best of all, served warm instead of cold 😋

Warm jokbal meat served on the plate
Cross-section of the well-boiled old-style king jokbal

True to its reputation as a Yongbong-dong jokbal favorite, there was no gamey smell at all, and it felt thoroughly well-boiled overall!

Holding up a wrapped jokbal bite

Piling jokbal onto a lettuce leaf with garlic and ssamjang really is the best way to eat it 👍

Chewy agangbal (trotter tip meat) portion

There was also agangbal (trotter tip meat) included, and the chewy texture was great.. 💛 If you like jokbal that's light yet tender, I'd strongly recommend this Yongbong-dong jokbal favorite!!!

The makguksu included in the couple's set

The makguksu served alongside the jokbal came in a generous portion, plenty for two to share!

Set makguksu with cabbage mixed in

The makguksu at Kkankkan in Yongbong-dong had cabbage mixed in, which gave it a slightly salad-like feel compared to typical makguksu! Generous portion, great pairing with the jokbal — glad I ordered the set 😊

The spicy mini trotter from the receipt review event

I took part in the receipt review event and chose the spicy mini-foot.

Spicy mini-foot received from the receipt review event
Close-up of the smoky, spicy mini-foot

The spicy mini-foot's defining feature is that smoky, fiery heat ✔️ It was fun picking the skin off, and the chewy texture was great too. Since it was a bonus from the review event, it felt like an extra-satisfying finish 😊

Verdict: is Kkankkanhan Jokbal worth it in Yongbong-dong, Gwangju?

  • ✔️ Spacious, comfortable interior, great for watching baseball while eating
  • ✔️ Warm, tender old-style king jokbal
  • ✔️ A generous spread with complimentary odeng-tang and steamed egg
  • ✔️ Even a spicy mini-foot from the review event!

Strongly recommended for anyone hunting for a Yongbong-dong favorite! The atmosphere is great for jokbal with a drink, so it's also a solid pick if you're after a Yongbong-dong bar 😉
