Jongno bakery garlic baguette at home with an americano: Munhwa

In short

Munhwa Bakery is an old neighborhood bakery at 65 Donhwamun-ro, 1st floor, in Jongno-gu, Seoul. On this visit only one item came home from Munhwa Bakery's bakery case — the garlic baguette — eaten with a hot americano. The crust is crisp, the inside stays moist with garlic flavor soaked through, so Munhwa Bakery suits anyone who likes bread that tastes like bread rather than something loud.

I visited Munhwa Bakery on Donhwamun-ro in Jongno-gu, Seoul. Jongno is a neighborhood where old alleys and a traditional atmosphere blend together, so it's genuinely fun just to walk around. When you catch the smell of freshly baked bread while wandering, your feet just naturally head toward it, haha. This time I went to Munhwa Bakery, known as a Jongno bakery, and picked up a garlic baguette from its lineup to take home.

These days there are all kinds of bakeries, from big chains to emotional, café-style spots, but an old neighborhood bakery has its own kind of charm. Munhwa Bakery wasn't about flashy interiors — it had a comfortable atmosphere that let the bread itself take center stage.

Inside Munhwa Bakery and why only the garlic baguette

Walking inside, all kinds of bread were laid out, and familiar yet appetizing bakery items immediately caught my eye. Out of everything, the first thing I picked was the garlic baguette.

Garlic baguette is a menu item I often go for at bakeries, since you get the baguette's signature crunch together with garlic flavor. Once I brought Munhwa Bakery's garlic baguette home, even just from the outside, the golden-brown baking looked really appetizing.

How Munhwa Bakery's garlic baguette tastes: crisp crust, moist center

The first thing I noticed on the first bite was the baguette's characteristic savory aroma and crisp texture. The crust was crunchy just enough, while the inside stayed soft without being too hard — easy to eat.

The real charm of a garlic baguette is the balance between garlic aroma and a touch of sweetness. Munhwa Bakery's version had a mild, spreading garlic scent with the richness of butter layered on top, giving it a full flavor.

It wasn't the type where the garlic flavor is overpoweringly strong — it was just enough to bring out the bread's own savoriness, making it easy for anyone to enjoy. The plainness of the baguette combined with the umami of the garlic sauce made it a menu item I kept reaching for.

The outside kept its crisp texture, while the inside felt moist with the garlic flavor soaked in. The baguette's plain flavor combined with the sweet and salty garlic sauce made it feel more like a snack or dessert than just plain bread.

The garlic baguette especially went well with coffee. Eating it alongside a hot americano brought out the garlic's savory flavor and the bread's crisp texture even more.

It worked well as a simple breakfast substitute, or as a snack during a hungry afternoon. It wasn't too heavy, but had that baguette-style chew, so even eating just one piece felt satisfying.

What I felt visiting Munhwa Bakery was that it has a different kind of charm from the flashy bakeries popular these days. I got to feel the comfort unique to an old bakery and taste bread that's true to the basics — a good place to stop by casually and pick up some delicious bread.
