Jongno 3-ga tile-roof takeout bakery: mugwort rice cake bread, Munhwa

I got a taste of Seoul air!! So many people do bakery tours around Seoul and I'd always been curious about it too~~~ So while wandering around the Jongno area, I stumbled onto a bakery I hadn't planned on, Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵), and stopped in.

Munhwa Bakery sits on Donhwamun-ro, between Jongno 3-ga station and Ikseon-dong. I almost just walked past, but the exterior alone had a different atmosphere. With interiors that look like a traditional tiled-roof hanok, it felt nothing like a chain bakery — there was something quietly eye-catching about it, and I found myself stopping without meaning to.

I happened to be looking for something to grab and go, so I went right in.

Turns out Munhwa Bakery is a takeout-only bakery. If you're hoping for a seating area, it's good to know ahead of time. I was already planning to take my bread to go, so lucky me 🍀

Why Munhwa Bakery's bread display differs from a neighborhood bakery

Munhwa Bakery's display case wasn't filled with the usual red bean bread, pizza bread or plain sliced loaves — instead there was coffee bread, maple cream cheese bread, and other less common items. The moment I walked in and saw the case, it was clearly a step away from a typical neighborhood bakery lineup. (Seeing the maple cream cheese bread now, I'm so curious what it tastes like... I should have bought that one too. Has anyone tried it? What's it like??)

Every single bread had its own personality that felt distinctly Munhwa Bakery, so I spent a long time deciding what to get. In the end, I settled on three: walnut bread, sweet potato bread, and mugwort rice cake bread!

I figured these would be great to eat while wandering around Seoul, or to take home and enjoy slowly, and honestly — spoiler alert — I was really satisfied.

Sweet potato bread: soft, like a sweet potato cream puff

First, the sweet potato bread stood out for its soft texture. It had that cozy, sweet sweet-potato flavor with an overall soft, easy-to-eat style. Personally it reminded me a bit of a sweet potato cream puff.

Walnut bread: nutty, like walnut cakes without the red bean

The one I had the most fun eating was the walnut bread. This was the real kicker!

It's like taking Korean walnut cookies, removing the red bean, and turning up the plain, nutty walnut flavor instead.

Every bite with a walnut piece gave that nutty flavor and distinct crunch, and I kept reaching for more.

Top pick — mugwort rice cake bread, chewy rice cake with mugwort aroma

If I had to rank my top pick out of the three, it's clearly the mugwort rice cake bread. This one hit my taste exactly, ㅜㅠ. There's chewy rice cake (tteok) tucked inside the bread, so the texture alone is fun the moment you bite in.

On top of that, there's a faint, fragrant mugwort flavor spreading through, and the way the bread's plain flavor pairs with the chewy rice cake worked better than I expected.

If you like mugwort in particular, this is worth trying at least once. It's not just sweet — the mugwort aroma, the plain flavor, and the chewy rice cake texture all come through together, and it really stuck with me.

A bakery to remember for takeout bread while exploring Ikseon-dong

I brought all three home from Munhwa Bakery and really enjoyed them. After finishing them, I got curious about the other breads too.

If you're heading to the Jongno area, this seems worth stopping by. It'll especially suit anyone who prefers a slightly different combination of bread rather than the usual standards.

If you're exploring around Ikseon-dong and looking for a snack or bread to take with you, keep Munhwa Bakery in mind as an Ikseon-dong bakery worth remembering. Personally, next time I'm in Seoul I want to buy from here again — and try some of the menu items I missed this time, one by one. As of today, this is my favorite bakery ever ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
