Geumcheon Japanese restaurant dinner sushi course: Gapposo

In short

Gapposo is a Japanese restaurant in Geumcheon, Seoul, serving sushi at lunch and aged sashimi at dinner. I had the solo dinner sushi course with five kinds of aged sashimi, grilled fish, tempura, 12 sushi pieces, and udon; they also accommodated my request to leave out salmon. Verdict: a satisfying course for anyone who loves the deep flavor of aged fish.

The overall look is clean and modern, with warm wood tones. The restaurant is small, but the ceiling is incredibly high, so it never feels cramped! There are private rooms at the back too, so reserve one if you’d like a quieter meal. This place is seriously famous in Gasan-dong—it is always fully booked at lunch. There are lots of international diners in the evening too, and it is popular for entertaining and business gatherings~

Today, I ordered the solo dinner sushi course!

First up was warm black sesame porridge. Nutty and warm~

Aged Assorted Sashimi and Warm Dishes

Next came five kinds of aged assorted sashimi. These dishes are made using traditional Japanese techniques with seafood and fish caught off the three coasts of the Korean Peninsula. Flounder, sea bream, salmon, tuna, and more are served according to the season. I can’t eat salmon, so I mentioned it, and they left it out of the following sushi course and gave me something else instead.

Five kinds of aged assorted sashimi

The aged assorted sashimi is a signature here. Fresh fish is aged just right, so the texture and umami are incredible! The slices are nice and thick too, making that texture extra good. Before the main sushi, grilled fish and tempura arrived. This grilled fish literally melted in my mouth..ㅠㅠ The server kindly explained every dish as it arrived, which was lovely too.

Now I get why it is so busy.. Every single thing was delicious, and the quality was truly great. Even that tomato in the back felt different when I ate it here.. I wanted about five more. Next was kobachi! Kobachi refers to a small dish served in a small bowl.

There were no fewer than three kinds of tempura. The kind of flavor that washes away all of today’s fatigue..♡

Look at how generously filled it is. As a tempura lover, I absolutely loved having a tempura dish in the course.

Twelve Sushi Pieces with the Flavor of Aged Fish

The main event has arrived: 12 pieces of sushi!

White-fleshed and red-fleshed fish sushi

If you want the deep flavor of aged fish rather than the usual conveyor-belt sushi, this is the answer. From white fish to red fish and uni (sea urchin roe).

Sushi including uni sea urchin roe

Anago (conger eel) sushi, softly grilled and brushed with a sweet-savory house sauce. Sweet shrimp that melts gently in the mouth (my favorite). Soft tuna sushi. And finally, a piece topped with caviar.. Ahh. It goes so well with premium seafood or rich, fatty fish. It takes the umami to the max!

For the final noodle dish, udon was served :) So good to wind down with warm broth after finishing all that sushi. This is a place serving approachable yet high-level kappo (Japanese fine-dining cooking), both à la carte and in courses, with a little less of the heaviness of traditional omakase.

A Japanese restaurant by Chef Song Ji-hoon, formerly an executive chef at a five-star hotel who hosted many VIP chairmen. It is Gasan-dong’s one truly excellent Japanese spot, actively featuring the freshest seasonal ingredients according to supply conditions. The entire restaurant can be booked privately too, so keep it in mind if you are looking for a venue for a company dinner.
