Gyeongju café with a kid, no wait but two mochi left: Tareudang

What kind of café is Tareudang?

Tareudang is a mochi and tart dessert café on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju. While looking for good desserts to try on a trip to Gyeongju, I found Tareudang. I'd heard it was famous for mochi, so I went on the very first day of the trip. Since it was a trip with my kid, I wanted to try something delicious together. But the moment I arrived, I was surprised by how many people were there.

Day one at Tareudang: the line was too long with a child

Tareudang sits right next to the road, and there was a long line of people waiting in front of the store. Waiting in that line with a child seemed pretty tough, so after a lot of thinking, I decided to give up for the day.

Back on Hwangnidang-gil the next afternoon

The next day, I timed my visit for a bit more of a relaxed afternoon slot. Unlike the day before, there was almost no one waiting, so this time I could go in comfortably.

By afternoon, almost every tart at Tareudang was sold out

But once I looked around inside, an unexpected situation awaited. Quite a lot of the tart flavors were gone. I guess that's what happens at a popular place — by late in the day, it wasn't easy to pick the flavor I wanted. When I visited, what was left was basically kiwi and choco. I'd wanted to pick a few different flavors to try one by one with my kid, so it was a little disappointing that there weren't many options, but since I'd wanted to try this place anyway, I decided to go with whatever was left.

What we bought: 2 kiwi mochi and 1 choco mochi, and the price

In the end I bought 2 kiwi (₩5,500) and 1 choco (₩5,000). The moment I paid and stepped outside with the tarts packed up, my kid saw the packaged mochi and immediately demanded one. 😂

I'd originally wanted to take pretty photos first, but that kind of thing doesn't matter to a kid. In the end I pulled one out right away and fed it, and wow, did they eat it well. We tried all kinds of things on this trip, but that day it almost seemed like the tart was the favorite. ❤️

Tareudang's kiwi mochi has a whole kiwi inside

Back at the hotel, when I cut into the kiwi mochi, I noticed a whole kiwi tucked inside. The refreshing kiwi blended nicely with the soft cream, and the mochi itself was chewy, so the texture was great too. The bright, tangy taste of the kiwi kept the whole thing from feeling heavy. More than anything, my kid loved it so much that it disappeared before I even had a chance to savor it slowly. 😂

The choco mochi was good too

The choco mochi had a different charm from the kiwi my kid ate. When I cut into it, the inside was packed full of chocolate cream (or filling?) — a sight that chocolate lovers would be happy to see just by looking at it. Tasting it, it wasn't just plain sweetness; there was a rich, proper chocolate flavor. It didn't have that overly sweet edge typical of chocolate desserts, and the chocolate flavor really came through, so personally I preferred the choco over the kiwi. The soft, dense chocolate paired well with the chewy mochi, and I imagine it would go great with coffee too. ☕️

Tips for visiting Tareudang with a child

This time I only got to try two flavors, kiwi and choco, but both were satisfying. Next time I visit Gyeongju, I'd like to go a bit earlier and try a wider variety of fruit mochi. If you're traveling in Gyeongju with a kid and looking for a good dessert, this is a place worth stopping by at least once.
