Craving shabu-shabu again — a Munhyeon-dong find
Right after our pre-wedding photo shoot my fiancé and I had already had shabu-shabu, then Vietnamese spring rolls, wolfing down everything in sight — so why on earth was I craving shabu-shabu again?? Hahaha. Especially spicy shabu kalguksu, I really wanted it, so while going "what should I eat~ what should I eat~" I found this spot in Munhyeon-dong!
And it happened to be right on the way to school since the semester just started haha. So before class, my fiancé and I went to eat at Yunujae Munhyeon Shabu Kalguksu (윤우재 문현샤브 칼국수)!
Location and parking for Yunujae Munhyeon Shabu Kalguksu

For parking, you can use the mall parking lot in the basement 1 floor of Daerim City Plaza! It's free for up to 2 hours, worth keeping in mind if you're driving haha.
Is it okay to bring a baby for lunch here?

If you're looking for a lunch spot in Munhyeon-dong to bring a baby, shabu kalguksu seems like a decent candidate haha. We ordered the spicy version, but if you're visiting with a baby, it'd be good to check the spice level before choosing! And the free 2-hour parking is handy if you're driving too.
Menu and order — spicy for two + 70g sirloin

What we ordered was the spicy broth for two with a 70g sirloin add-on! Perfect menu for me who wanted both shabu-shabu and kalguksu hahaha. And apparently the noodles here are house-made. House-made noodles!!! Ohhh...
If you love kalguksu, seeing that just makes you more excited, right haha.
Self-serve bar and sauce ratio

At the self-serve bar there's kimchi, kkakdugi, and sauces set out, so you just scoop as much as you want.

The sauce ratio was written out too — soy sauce 2 to wasabi 1! But I'm not really a wasabi fan so I couldn't bring myself to put in a full 1...? Hahaha.

I put in about 0.3 and to my taste it was absolutely delicious!! If you like wasabi, go with the ratio as instructed; if the wasabi smell is a bit much for you like me, adding it little by little is a good idea haha.
How does the spicy shabu-shabu broth taste?

Out came the shabu-shabu, spicy broth piled high with vegetables! We added meat too, and the broth got richer and richer as it boiled — I loved that so much T_T.

At first it was just the spicy broth flavor, but after eating the meat and vegetables, more flavor got added to the broth and I kept scooping spoonful after spoonful!

Meat, then vegetables, then a sip of broth... ah, this is it hahahaha.

How to boil the house-made kalguksu just right
And finally, the kalguksu I'd been waiting for!!! There were instructions on the table for how to cook the noodles best, so I followed them exactly! After finishing the meat, add the noodles, and once the broth starts boiling, set the induction to 6 and boil for 5 minutes!

They said it's easiest to stir well so the noodles don't clump and use the 5-minute hourglass timer haha. Having an actual hourglass there made cooking the noodles kind of fun? Hahahaha.

And then I tried the noodles... wow... so chewy!!! Chewy with every bite, and the spicy broth clung to the noodles so well it was perfect for slurping.

The broth had gotten even richer than at the start, so eating it with the kalguksu, it felt spicy but deep at the same time!
Wait, I came here for shabu-shabu and ended up falling for the kalguksu all over again hahahaha. You'd think finishing the kalguksu would be the end? Nope.
Finishing with fried rice

Scoop the remaining broth into a big bowl, set the induction to 3, and fry up the rice. Haha, looking at these photos now, I'm hungry, this looks so good.
Took one bite of the fried rice... amazing... why is even the fried rice this good?
The spicy broth flavor had soaked into the rice, so it had way more savory depth than plain rice, plus a nutty flavor that kept me going back for more T_T.

Especially the slightly crisped part stuck to the bottom of the pot! That scraping-it-off taste is a whole different pleasure hahaha. I scraped it all clean to the very end. Even after shabu-shabu, kalguksu, and fried rice, I still hated to leave that last spoonful behind.
Recommended for a Munhyeon-dong lunch!
After eating that much right after the photo shoot, I still craved shabu-shabu again... and in the end I left extremely satisfied hahaha. Eating in this order — spicy shabu-shabu → chewy kalguksu → fried rice — made for such a filling meal!
If you're deciding on lunch in Munhyeon-dong or want both shabu-shabu and kalguksu in one meal, I recommend Yunujae Munhyeon Shabu Kalguksu hahaha. Next time I'm craving kalguksu, I'll probably go again with my fiancé! And I'll make sure to finish with the fried rice again too~
