Gwangju Chinese restaurant visit with dad for stone-griddle jjajang

In short

Mayway is a Chinese restaurant in Cheomdan, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, rebranded from the 70-year-old Daeheung Banjeom. After spotting stone-griddle jjajang on TV, the writer's dad wanted to try it, so they ordered stone-griddle jjajang, a solo set meal, and tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) with self-serve scallion kimchi and free rice. The tangsuyuk, with its thin crust and thick juicy meat, became the writer's all-time favorite.

Mayway's signature stone-griddle jjajang

My dad saw stone-griddle jjajang on TV and had been wanting to eat it for days, so I searched high and low and finally took him here!

Entrance of Mayway, rebranded from Daeheung Banjeom

Turns out this place is a rebrand of Daeheung Banjeom, which had a 70-plus-year history! If a place was loved for that long, the taste is basically guaranteed, haha??

Seating inside Mayway
Clean interior of Mayway's dining hall

One and a half months after opening, what's the vibe like?

Here's the inside of Mayway. Since it had only been open about a month and a half, the interior was super clean. There was none of that oily, greasy-food smell you usually get at Chinese restaurants, which made it even more pleasant! They also have baby chairs, so it's good to visit with kids, haha.

The menu and what we ordered

Here's the menu at Mayway. From solo set meals to noodle dishes, soups, Mayway's own signature dishes, and stir-fried dishes—it's packed with delicious options! Especially nice: the stir-fried dishes have half-portion options, so you can eat cheaply and try a variety, haha.

Mayway's self-serve side dish corner
Scallion kimchi from the self-serve corner

A Chinese restaurant that gives you scallion kimchi

You grab side dishes from the self-serve corner, and unusually, they have scallion kimchi here!! A Chinese restaurant that gives you scallion kimchi 💕 Also, the rice was free, which was even better!

Default sweet potato fritter side dish

This is the sweet potato fritter that comes as a default side—crispy and sweet at the same time, so good!!! Perfect as an appetizer 👍

A plate of Mayway's tangsuyuk
Cross-section of thick tangsuyuk with thin crust

The tangsuyuk that became my all-time favorite

The tangsuyuk came out first. It wasn't the usual tangsuyuk look I know, so I was a bit thrown off—but setting that confusion aside, I took a bite and... wow, this is genuinely delicious! It feels more like fried meat than typical tangsuyuk!! Thin crust with thick, juicy meat inside is so appealing!!! It's become my all-time favorite tangsuyuk 💕 Also, they currently have an event where tangsuyuk is ₩100 if you buy 2 or more draft beers, so keep that in mind!!

Solo set meal with jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk

Jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk in one bowl: the solo set meal

I was curious so I ordered the solo set meal. You know how at Chinese restaurants you always agonize over jjajang (black bean noodles) or jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup)? So you order jjamjjamyeon (half and half)? (And even then you keep agonizing lol.) But then you also crave dumplings and tangsuyuk... This place completely erases that dilemma. It puts all three in one bowl lol. Generous portion, tastes great, and satisfies all three cravings at once—isn't this the perfect menu for single-person households or solo diners?

The empty stone griddle served first
Jjajang being poured onto the stone griddle

How does the signature stone-griddle jjajang arrive?

Finally, the long-awaited Mayway signature stone-griddle jjajang! At first only the stone griddle came out and I thought, huh, what's this? Then suddenly the staff poured the jjajang right onto the heated griddle!!!

Stone-griddle jjajang sizzling on the griddle

I marveled at the sight of the jjajang sizzling away on the hot griddle, and marveled again at how generously loaded it was with ingredients. Time for a bite of the stone-griddle jjajang, right??

Mixed stone-griddle jjajang noodles
Eating stone-griddle jjajang with scallion kimchi

It's delicious plain, but eating it with the scallion kimchi from the self-serve corner is truly amazing. You all know the combo of Chapagetti and scallion kimchi, right? Now imagine that but with actual jjajangmyeon—how much better could it get???! Plus the portion of stone-griddle jjajang was huge... (like 2-3 servings...?) The staff said mixing rice into the leftover sauce is delicious, but I felt like I'd burst, so I couldn't manage it ㅠㅠ

Dessert served at the end of the meal
Mayway's dessert topped with blueberries

Well-timed dessert too

And with perfect timing, right as we finished the meal, they brought out dessert too 💕 Ah, that's just so touching!! It wasn't just plopped down carelessly either—they topped it neatly with a blueberry accent! That extra care right there ㅠㅠ Truly, Mayway in Cheomdan touched this MZ-generation heart multiple times.

Mayway's 10% opening discount coupon

They're currently giving out a 10% opening discount coupon, so you should definitely go, haha?? If you're looking for a great stone-griddle jjajang, jjamppong, or tangsuyuk spot in Cheomdan, I recommend Mayway 👍
