This local favorite has a wall sign explaining how to eat jjukkumi the best way, starting with the side dish combo — perilla leaves, pickled radish, bean sprouts — down to the restaurant's magic garlic sauce, which had me excited before I'd even taken a bite. Extra side dishes were available at a self-serve corner that was kept impressively clean and tidy.

And finally, today's star — the jjukkumi! At this local favorite, the plump octopus arrives topped with cabbage, green onion, and sujebi (hand-torn dough pieces). At this Ajung-ri restaurant, the sauce's color alone tells you it's going to be delicious, and the sujebi comes standard — no extra ordering needed!

For reference, at Jjukkumi Sinhwa the owner personally cooks everything through to the end, so all you have to do is sit back and wait :) Once spread out on the grill, the portion looked even more massive, and even the basic flavor sent up a spicy aroma that lived up to Jeonju's reputation for heat ⚡️

This local favorite also includes steamed egg (gyeranjjim) as standard to help tame the spice, no extra charge :) Apparently egg prices have gone up so now they charge ₩2,000 for an extra order — which makes it even more surprising that it used to be free!

The owner-cooked jjukkumi stir-fry — basic flavor but fully soaked in spicy sauce! At this local favorite, you could see just by looking at it how plump and springy the octopus was. Even the basic flavor sent a spicy scent right up my nose, in true fashion for a spice-focused restaurant, and it was hard to resist 🥹

Following the instructions and dunking it fully into the special garlic sauce, the sharp, savory-and-rich garlic flavor mellowed the spiciness of the jjukkumi and elevated the whole thing. Piling crisp bean sprouts onto a fresh perilla leaf, then adding sauce-soaked jjukkumi, and wrapping it all up as a ssam (wrap) — that's basically the ultimate truth :) The wrap vegetables, side dishes, and jjukkumi all filled my mouth together, and the combination of fragrance and springy texture was really great.

Finishing with cheese fried rice at Jjukkumi Sinhwa

For someone who can't handle spice well, even the basic flavor at this local favorite was hot — but it's the kind of addictive spicy sauce that would feel like a waste not to turn into fried rice! They added seaweed, vegetables, and cheese to the fried rice, then finished it off with a generous swirl of perilla oil :)

The spicy sauce and melted, savory cheese come together into gorgeous, glistening cheese fried rice ✨ I was already stuffed from the huge portion of jjukkumi stir-fry, but the fried rice was so perfect that I ended up overeating anyway 🥹 The savory cheese tamed the spice nicely, and it was just as good eaten with the wrap vegetables :)
