Frozen pork belly keeps crossing my mind — World Naengsam in Uwa-dong, Jeonju

There's a dish I keep thinking about lately! Frozen pork belly, or naengsam! Thick pork belly is great of course, but the nutty flavor and crisp texture you get from thinly sliced, quickly grilled naengsam is a different kind of appeal.

This time I went to World Naengsam in Uwa-dong, Jeonju. It was a sponsored visit, but honestly, after eating there I found myself thinking I'd want to come back and pay for it myself next time!

Inside — clean for a BBQ place

I visited right before the early dinner rush hit full swing. Walking in, there was already a group reservation set up, and the staff were getting ready for guests.

What struck me was that even while busy, the tables weren't messy at all — everything was quite neatly arranged. You'd expect a BBQ place to have a heavy oil smell with slippery floors or tables sometimes, but this place felt clean overall.

There were plenty of tables for the size of the place, which made it look good for family meals or for a group coming to eat pork belly together.

Menu and prices — simple, centered on frozen pork belly

The menu at World Naengsam Uwa was simpler than I expected! The signature dish is of course frozen pork belly, and there's also gochujang frozen pork belly, Korean beef brisket (chadolbaegi), pork skin, and grilled deodeok (bellflower root).

World Naengsam apparently uses 1+ grade domestic Korean pork that's slaughtered the same day and then flash-frozen. Some people might picture cheap, freezer-burned meat when they hear 'frozen pork belly,' but because they use good-quality raw meat and just flash-freeze it, the flavor of the meat itself was genuinely good when I tried it!

Three servings of frozen pork belly, from the moment it hits the grill

We ordered the most basic option that day — three servings of frozen pork belly!

Thin frozen pork belly slices placed on the grill

Thinly sliced naengsam gets your appetite going the moment it hits the grill~~ Unlike regular pork belly, you don't have to wait long since the thin slices cook fast, so you end up picking off pieces one by one while chatting haha.

Watching the edges turn golden brown first is just too tempting lol.

The basic side dish spread

The complimentary side dishes were solid — everything you'd want at a naengsam place. Shredded scallions, kimchi, scallion kimchi, pickled onion, lettuce wraps — a well-rounded lineup to go with the meat.

I grabbed a piece as soon as it looked done — thanks to the thin cut, the outside was lightly crisp while the inside still had that characteristic pork belly richness!

What I liked most was that it wasn't overly greasy lol. With cheap naengsam, a few bites in and you're sick of the oil, right? But alternating with kimchi and scallions here, I kept reaching for more~~

The complimentary kimchi jjigae and cheese steamed egg

Personally, what impressed me most that day was the complimentary kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) and steamed egg! Usually the free stew at a BBQ place is just something you sip alongside the meat, but here the kimchi jjigae was genuinely good!

Eating pork belly, then taking a spoonful of hot kimchi jjigae broth... it resets your palate so you can go right back to eating meat like it's your first bite!!! And the fluffy, cheese-topped steamed egg was perfect to spoon up alongside.

Honestly, considering the kimchi jjigae and steamed egg come free with the meal, I was pretty satisfied~~~ But... you can't hold back on rice with this, right... so we quickly ordered a bowl of rice and shared it.

Finishing the meal with bibim guksu

After eating a good amount of meat, I started craving a noodle dish... so we ordered bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles), and it was pretty tasty too. The tangy, spicy sauce with a touch of sweetness really perks up your appetite! And eating it together with a piece of naengsam...

You really have to try the bibim guksu — it's seriously good!

To sum up

I went to World Naengsam Uwa near Jeonju Station for the frozen pork belly, but ended up loving the complimentary side dishes just as much as the meat. This visit was sponsored, but I genuinely thought, 'I could come back here and pay out of my own pocket next time!'

I'd recommend it to anyone who loves naengsam, anyone looking for a clean BBQ restaurant near Jeonju Station, or anyone wanting a comfortable spot to grill pork belly with family or friends!
